prop&gear

hi
i recently put a new prop on,i now realize that the engine was in gear when i did this. now when i try to start the boat it wont go into neutral or reverse just forward .
replacing prop due to hitting something
what am i doing wrong ?

Installing a new prop should have no affect on shifting from neutral to forward or reverse. The reason you can't shift properly is because you hit something and damaged the lower unit in addition to the prop -- not because you changed the prop.

Can you turn the prop by hand, either direction?

yes the prop turns in forward gear only,it wont go into neutral or reverse

the prop only wants to turn one way( forward ) when the engine is running it wont change gear .
