Might give a boat mechanic envy
If I can shorten the bellhousing, I may be able to move the trans closer to the motor.....

if the Audi W8 wasnt so unreliable, its very short, and already bolts up to the 01E transmission.

Why is it not reliable?
It overheats (poor cooling), then it looses the head gasket (NLA). Timing chain arrangement is iffy. can't get rebuild parts (however, you can modify the 2.0 and 2.8 parts)

Limited factory support, no aftermarket support

Limited power output

Limited power probably wouldn't be a problem for you. The heat may be. I suspect you could overcome the glitches.

Going down that rabbit hole on Motorgeek.com to see if the juice is worth the squeeze

Well, the W8 motor is heavy.... 460#. can probably pull a few # off, however that is nearly 80# more then the LS4. However it is much shorter, only about 17-18" long vs the LS4 at 23" But it is really tall and wide compared to the LS4

also, stock output is 271 hp from the 4 liter. with some minor work, you can get 300hp. while it can be boosted, the very narrow rod bearings and the split throws on the crank limit the power to about 450 before things have an un-scheduled rapid disassembly. Normal service items like the thermostat, etc are ultra-expensive.

here is a teardown.

why would you trade an LS platform for a Crankenstein trouble fest?

because my car is under 11 feet long, and the extra 6" of room would greatly help. detriments are..... the 4.0 liter W8 is not only 80# heavier, its 3" taller, and 2" wider. so that doesnt help.. plus lots of cost needed to get up to the 450hp range (as in about $20k)

so the W8 mid-engine rabbit hole thought process is now dead

Spent last few weekends fitting clear hurricane panels and kevlar curtains

We managed to be in the right place when people were updating to powered roll-up and hurricane windows. With my canvas guy modifying some of the curtains we are all-in for under 1 BOAT unit

Helps that the canvas guy has family that makes hurricane curtains.
