Hello folks,
Ive got issue with paint job on my Gen 2.
The paint was very old so Ive decided to repaint it and twice I have had the same issue..
The paint after 1 summer season is a junk.
Ive sanded the old paint, then gray quicksilver spray, green zinc and then Ive put Quicksilvers BlackPhantom.
After 6 months in the water the paint easily scraps when power wash and there are bubbles or something like that... whats wrong?!!

Maybe some incompatibility in the paints used? Some primers require a short window before top coat maybe wait too long?

I have had good luck with just the gray quicksilver primer and phantom balck on top of. Better luck with this than the green or yellow zinc primers but I am on a hoist and in clean fresh water.

I would also use a wax and grease remover from automotive refinishing before you paint, this could be the bubbling, or the top coat is drying before the base coats are done offgasing VOC's ?

If you really want to do it beadbalst it down to complete bare aluminum, and use PPG DP90 epoxy primer then topcoat as you wish.

I'm trying Majic Tractor Truck and Implement Enamel primer and gloss black top coat with their catalyst hardener. It laid down well (I reduced the top coat with naphtha and sprayed with an HVLP gun)...we'll just have to see how it holds up.

I assume that you do not store boat wet????? If you do, then perhaps electrical currents are your enemy??? I have had this issue where top coat was incompatible, primer needed sanding before top coat, waited too long or I didn't use enough catalyst. I always use automotive grade paints that require hardeners and now I FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.

What do You mean by electrical current issues ?
Yes I store boat in the water during the summer season

Someone or ones' battery charger or shore power is putting stray currents in water and currents eat paint to get at metal on OD. Just a guess..... I never store my boat wet. I trailer it and never have had an issue. I learned decades ago with an OMC. Good luck!

Stray electrical current in the water from your boat or other boats around you causing galvanic corrosion. If you are connected to shore power or have battery charges ?Could be an issue but I think you'd see pitting on the aluminum more. Google it you will see some nasty eaten up drives especially bravo 3's...

There are a lot of boats in the marina, some of them are connected to the shore powerr.
I charge from time to time my battery on the boat. There is no corrosion on the drive only the paint is not sticking...

Wrong order. Etching primer first (your green zinc), then Gray primer, then top coat.

Hi Chris thanks for your answer,
3 years ago Ive cleaned drive by sand paper, sprayed it with gray quicksilver then PhantomBlack and it was the same result... Paint was just scrapping by nail /power wash

Bare aluminium needs an etching primer (usually a zinc based paint, coloured green) for any other paint to adhere to. If you didn't START with the etch primer, nothing is going to stick.

first, the primer was applied wrong like Chris mentioned

second, a rattle can of black paint that is solvent dried vs a catalyst dry will always fail if kept in the water. spray can paint will never seal out the water

you need a zinc primer. if its prohibited, either go where its not prohibited, or find somewhere that can apply it (permitted)

now for top coats. mercury phantom black is PPG 9000 black. same as GM black, tuxedo black (and many more) and is also rustoleum black. the only thing that mercury phantom black differs from the others is mercury has a cool name and they charge more.

you will need a 2-part top coat (paint plus catalyst). that means not a rattle can, however a properly sprayed paint. many people use cheap rustoleum with a hardener with good success.

you will also need to have the drive off the boat to do a good job.

DO NOT powdercoat. Quickest way to overheat the drive and cook the internals.

Like scott is telling you go to a place that sells auto body paint. Tell them what you are working on aluminum, have them sell you correct primer and topcoat , spray with a gun. Good paint is expensive ... i mentioned the PPG DP90expoxy primer In previous post, every application i have used this on it works great. Bead blast to bareAluminum DP epoxy primer and a PPG deltron topcoat and it will last a long time

Ayuh,..... Is this boat a trailer queen, or dock kept,..??

If a trailer queen,.... wipe it down, 'n rattlecan paint it, every time you take it outa the water,.....

If it's a dock kept boat, yer never gonna keep it shiny clean black,.....

My boats, I scrape off most of the crud once a year, 'n rattlecan paint it with Rustoleum black,.....
