Re: Probable cause of water in cylinders on mercruseser 260 V8

I'm embarrased to say that after checking the plug wires multiple times, I finally realized I set it up to a RH engine firing order instead of the correct LH firing order. I changed it around and it started right up. I adjusted the timing to 8 BTDC and it seems to run fine. I ran it about 20 min on muffs and the oil still looks clean. Tomorrow I'll put it in the water. I'll do one final post on this thread hopefully with good news that all works well!

Re: Probable cause of water in cylinders on mercruseser 260 V8

I put it in thr water yesterday and it started to run fine. To get out to the open bay, I had to go slow for about a quater mile in a lagoon. I was purring along about 5 knots at just above idle 1000 RPM,s happy that the job was a success. Then all of a sudden it started to run rough and stalled. It started right up again, but when i put it in forward it runs rough and wants to stall. I started it up again in nuetral. I reved it in nuetral to about 2500-3000 RPM's and it acts fine with no load. I then put it back in gear and gave it a little more gas and was able to complete my trip to the dock I was headed for(about 2 miles away). I was able to get it up on plane, but I was afraid to go too slow for fear of stalling. At the dock I changed the fuel/water seperator, there was no water in it, but there was sediment at the bottom. I'm going to change the coil tomorrow and try it again. Any ideas on what could be happening?
Thanks,

After changing the coil and fuel filter it ran fine. I took it on a 6 hr round trip this past weekend and it ran great.
Thanks to everyone for their help!!!

So where is the troubleshooting guide for water in cylinders. I can't find

Try the Stickies on top of the Mercruiser section or start a new thread in the OMC section to get advice. Look at the OMC Stickies.
