pressure in upper gear case

The sealing surface on the ball gear has small porosities where the seal lips contact it. This is where 90% of the water enters the gear case. As in post #3 the gear case goes from positive to negative pressure which allows water to enter the gear case.

On the lake: just double check and make sure you have water flowing: most likely, you're fine BUT the hose can push water up the system if the pump isn't working.

If you still get water in the upper gear case at that point, there are still plenty of things to check. I would start back at the pressure test.
