powerhead resurfacing?

I have a 115 evinrude that i had taken to the repair shop to have an low idle cutoff problem fixed. Was told that the compression was low on the powerheads, no damage to the powerheads, was going to need to have the powerheads resurfaced. My question is how expensive is that with labor and parts to remove, resurface and reinstall. Also what is involved with the resurfacing process.

Maybe you mean cylinder heads? If so, not a big deal. Just resurface till they're flat ... no more. Any decent auto machine shop can mill them for a nominal cost. If the powerhead mating surface is not flat, that's entirely a different deal, but pretty uncommon. Cylinder heads are often warped by incorrect torquing or overheating (more common).

If they are trying to cut the heads to get the compression up, that's a really bad idea.

Re: powerhead resurfacing?

Lots of miscommunication going on here. The shop said the engine had low compression, and recommended resurfacing the heads. I'm betting a blown head gasket caused the low compression, and the OP just didn't understand what they explained or can't explain it well here.

I mean, blown head gaskets are not all that rare and they do cause low compression.

The repair shop said that the compression was 20 lbs low and that the cyclinder heads were a little warped. he said that the warping wasnt enough to do any harm but because of the low idle engine cut out, resurfacing would be recommended.
