picked up a Johnson power trim unit off a 1986 90hp. the relay box has a red, red/purple, and black wires coming out of it to be connected to the powerhead. not sure where to connect the red/purple.

I believe the red/purple wire offers the choice to allow the T&T to operate any time the the red wire is powered on or to operate only when the ignition key switch is on. Connect to other red wire or to the purple wire from ignition switch respectively depending on which way you choose.

The black is ground there should be a wiring diagram on the cover of the black box. The red and red/purple wires are the primary power wires for the tilt and trim.

it doesn't seem to be working...whats an easy way to test a two wire trim motor?

Hook them up to +/- on a 12V battery (after disconnecting from harness). One polarity is up, swap for down.
