Disconnect switch on cowling.---Then disconnect switch on the control box.
what are possible contributing issues? This started when wake came over transom-new trim motor and 2 relays-just installed thank you Andy

Most often water gets into the toggle type switches. This can complete the circuit, running the trim motor, with the switch in the off position. Generally motor mounted PTT switches are fairly water resistant. Are your switches OEM or aftermarket?

He's telling you how to diagnose if it's one of the switches. Eliminate the switches as a problem then if it's not that go to the next possibility.

The controls to the motor are new johnson controls-I had the trim motor replaced oem and two new relays installed. Things were fine for several days of use .I was anchored and took on some boat wake spilling over the transom. I heard the trim motor kick on for a couple of seconds-then after a couple more waves, the trim kicked on and stayed going in the down position-I hit the up toggle the trim motor stops but does not go up--once released the trim goes to the down cycle. I popped off one relay to stop the trim motor-The engine and area have been drying out for a couple of days-still have same scenario

The relays should be sealed, so I do not think those are the issue. It is therefore time to disconnect the motor mounted PTT switch. If that doesn't fix it, you need to look at the PTT motor wires that run from the PTT motor to the relays, as well as any other wiring. It is a fairly simple system. If it is not a switch issue, I am not sure what it could be. Relays do stick, I have heard, but never had the issue.

Water got in the switch....the one below the cowl, and can't get out.

This should be easy to diagnose. You have a short somewhere.

Do you have a meter and do you know how to use one?

yes on multi meter-will trace today ty
The relay receptacle was melted-this trim motor was just installed-question was the wiring connection a possible flaw by the mechanic -dont mind paying for a issue that comes up-seems more then a coincidence

just wondering if wire connections were done correctly-wake over transom has happened many times with no issue-I guess it could be worse-all part of the boating game-ty all for insights

melting indicates very high current draw across a resistive path P=R Xi Xi

bad -flooded switches would likely not carry such high current and likely just blow the 10 amp fuse ... used to energize the low amp relay windings used to mecanically close and feed high current to the usual blue-green for the amp hungry T&T motor.

flooded relay contacts with salt water on the high amp output side of relay contacts is a different story !

Current flow could be triggered followed by high amp arcing across the contacts and with unprotected (fused) B+and ground) things could have warmed up pretty fast resulting in what you found.

The T&T motor likely drew up to 20-25 amps across the small relay contact surfaces

the dealer likely did not mess it up...salt water did it.
