Re: power head interchange
Ehhhh.....I don't think I would do that exact swap.
Boobie is exactly right... technically it will work. But there are powerhead differences that IMHO make the '93 an inferior replacement choice.
First difference is that the '93 is a closed deck looper and your '96 is an open deck looper. That is a significant design change, and I think the open deck design is better.
Secondly, the '96 is finger ported and the '93 is not. I think better performance with the finger ported. Regarding the rotating assembly, the '93 rods were big and heavy, the '96 rods were smaller and lighter.
Thirdly, if you put the WHOLE induction system from the '96 on the '93 block....that includes the intake, reeds, throttle plates, and carb bodies, and silencer, then it will work best. If you start mixing and matching with some of the newer '96 parts and some of the older '93 parts, trying to cut assembly time corners...you will run into trouble.
Fourthly, the cooling system, thermos, bypass poppet, all that stuff was being changed thru the earlier years. The '96 is a good final design, with some possible disagreement regarding the water deflector system they settled on.
But it WILL work.
Boobie said the whole powerhead....and you mentioned the silencer. So, based on those two clues, if you plan to use the '93 COMPLETE dressed powerhead, then you will be going backwards with regard to design improvements. For instance, the wiring harness will not connect to your existing boat harness. The wiring under the powerpack has been improved...no terminal strip for example.
Just little stuff that will get up and bite you when you do the swapover.
I don't know how much of the powerhead you will actually be getting.
I guess my point is that unless it is a really great deal, try to get a 1996 up thru 2001 powerhead, and take advantage of the evolution of design improvements that they finally settled on in 1996. The 89 thru 93 was constantly changed to try to correct problems. When they hit on the final 1996 design, it was good.
EDIT: By the way, if you want to sell that block and are close to Mims, FL 32754, I maybe might be interested if the price was right. I will not pay to have it shipped here. It must be close enough to drive to get it....
