Is that a 14 or 16 footer?

Interesting question, the title says it was a 14’ and the manufacturers tag says 15’. Now you got me thinking I should grab a tape and confirm

1966 Jet Star - Just picked this up for $3500 and it’s in great shape! Has a 50hp Yamaha 4 stroke. More pics to come once I get it in the water this week.

I just picked up a 1972 Starcraft 18' Mariner-V with a 55 Yamaha on the back:


The previous owner removed the center console to open up more space, and added a small side console. Not a bad choice. I really like all the room it created inside.



This boat is now 50 years old. She is in really good shape, overall. No real dents, solid floors, and owner says she doesn't leak a drop. She needs some TLC, though. There are a lot of screw holes in the tops of the gunnels. I need to either put a rail back on or just seal up the holes. I guess I could just put screws in them, but maybe a bit of marine epoxy stick sanded smooth would be better.




Looking at the spec page, this boat is rated for 125 HP motor. That is surprising. I have a 90 Evinrude, but even that seems like an awful lot of motor for an aluminum boat. The current motor is not rigged, so now I have to decide whether to rig the 55 or just go for the 90 HP. Seems that if I go lighter, that gives more carrying capacity. I want to put a trolling motor on the front, and it's a 24V system, so that extra weight can be compensated for with a lighter motor.

Another big decision is what to do with the paint. Olive drab is not my thing, and that bottom paint needs to come off. I usually paint aluminum boats gray or white, but maybe I'm just boring. Any color suggestions?

Any thoughts, suggestions or comments? Any Mariner 18 owners out there? I'm definitely interested in feedback before I start digging into this thing. Thanks in advance.

Really interesting boat, amazing design for 50 years old! I had an aluminum welder fill my screw holes, and just ground them nearly flat and wire brushed all the gunnel rails with a sanding wheel drill - came out nice. I also struggled with color. I wanted something cheery for my young grand kids, so I went with Total Boat-Aqua Mist. I’m really happy with it…

I’d go for the 90hp! You can always run it slower hahaha. Not sure about filling the holes. I opted to fill with screws on my 1966 Jetstar.

Wow wow wow. Looks very similar to my '66 Jetstar with the one piece curved plexi windshield.

Im currently restoring my ole Gal. Shes been in the famiky since I was born. Litterally... i popped out, pap went and bought a boat.

new to the forum, my neighbor gave me this boat, said didnt have time or money to restore it so gifted it to me cause ive been hounding him for 4 years to let go of it.. but free is on a another level... so the tear down begins...

prob take a couple years to break it down and build her back up from the rivets.... minor hull repair, new transom, floors..... not many hours on the 2 stroke 75 mercury motor its in really good shape... new steering already ... just needs some love... so it begins, tearing it down to the studs (ribs n stringers)
