I have a 40hp Mariner 2 stroke 4cyl. (1990) outboard. I wanted to replace the impeller today, but when I went to lift the engine, the hydrolics wouldn't work. I spent all day side-tracked on this new problem. I charged the battery and finally had it tested at WalMart. The one fuss in the engine is fine. When I press the switches on the motor and the one on the throttle box, I hear a clicking noise in the engine (sounds like a car starter solenoid when the battery is dead). Any ideas? Thanks!!

Also, when I get around to replacing the impeller, do I put it in neutral or reverse? The manual I have said for the 3hp motors, do neutral and 4 hp, do reverse (I didn't see anything specific for the larger engines).

Re: Please help!!!

There are two small relays for the trim, one up the other for down.

If they are the older small round relays with two larger terminals you may have a three wire trim motor, your problem may be a poor ground connection, a poor battery connect to those relays or a bad trim motor.

If they are the newer small square relays you may have the two wire motor, but the problems are quite the same, a poor ground, poor battery connection suppling the relays or a bad motor.

Clean ALL connections to the relays and retest.
