So got a boat with a mercruiser 260.
Replaced the valve cover.
Went out on the water and at low rpm it was fine
Higher rpm it immediately smoked and overheated
Came back the next day and there was oil pooling in the bilge?
Any help would be much appreciated

Ayuh,.... The 260 hp 350 Chevy has been in production since bout the early '70s,....
You've gotta narrow it down a bit more than that,....
'n why would you replace only one valve cover,..??

overheat has nothing to do with the valve cover

on this new to you boat, did you do all the drive maintenance, cooling maintenance, fuel system maintenance, etc that the prior owners did not do?

If you bought a boat missing a valve cover you probably have a few more problems. Go thru it with a fine comb.

Ok sorry wasn’t getting email updates.
Don’t know the year
It wasn’t missing it
Tan fine for first few trips and then was running fine at lower speed after about half throttle started to heat up. Yes all the other maintenance was done. Risers impeller etc.

Ayuh,.... What vintage is the boat,..??..??

If it overheated, start at the impeller, 'n work out from there to find where the water problem is,....

To find the oil leak, ya just gotta Look,.....
