Re: Please Help Identify My Impeller!?!?!

My question is this even if you get the driveshaft out aren't you going to have to get it back in the lower unit and destroy the driveshaft seals in the process? Ohh and do you have the Key for the water pump, and if you file a small notch in the housing isn't it going to leak out of the housing? I would trash the motor.

Well a new motor is FOR SURE not in the budget this season. Yes I have the key for the waterpump, and it came off without damaging the water pump housing there is plenty of room between driveshaft and housing. As for the driveshat seat in the LU it really just looks like a splined receiver with a tiny o ring around it, or ing still soft and i can put the driveshaft back in pretty easily. I guess I get the new impeller put in together and see what happens. Think I will just start saving for a new motor next season, perhaps a whole new boat!

I think they're concerned about your impeller wear plate having the impeller key boogering it up. You can bet that something in the water pump does NOT have clearance for the impeller key normally. As to the LU, pulling the driveshaft out will not damage it as far as I know. But, you'll have to get it back in.... Sometimes it just slips back in if the pinion gear is still matching up, sometimes you have to split the case and redo it.

No, your lower unit should be just fine. You may as well replace the upper gear case seal, while you have it apart, so you won't have to later. While you're at it, you can give the brass bushing around the shift rod a slight tap, to tighten the shift rod seal too. Doing these two little things should reduce the chance of water intrusion in the lower unit and if you do in the future, you won't have to remove the lower unit again, to reseal it.

The wear plate is under the key and looks to be in fine shape. How will i know if I have the driveshaft seated back in he LU properly? if I turn the driveshaft by hand should the prop turn? Thanks for everyone's help!

Yes, it will. You will just have to turn the drive shaft until the splines match up with those in the pinion gear then the drive shaft will drop all the way down to where it needs to be.

Ok guys so I just wanted to give you guys an update, ordered impeller and installed it. Tested it in the lake today and a nice solid stream came pouring out of the engine:) Seemed to be working fine, and didnt notice any issues right away. I do have one more question though, how can i tell if the LU leaks water? Again I want to thank you guys for all the help, if any of you guys are in the Mitchell South Daota area I owe a couple of you guys a beer!

Drain a little gear oil out of the LU. If there's any water, it will be first out if the motor has been sitting w/o running for a few hours min. if you get only gear oil and it's not milky, you're fine.
