Hello everybody,

Was wondering if I could get some advice- I have an Evinrude 33hp ski twin outboard, and was doing a little work on it last year. In essence, I had a leaky bottom end, or let me re-phrase that; the bottom end of the motor was leaking, so I got a gasket set, and replaced the seals.

I got it all back together, and buttoned everything up, and realized that it dropped back into gear as I was reassembling everything.

I was told that you can not get this back into neutral, without tearing it back apart- can somebody confirm or deny this??

I barely bumped the thing, when it apparently went back into gear, or actually, I think what happened, is before bolting the bottom casing back together, I madesure the gear was in the neutral position- after it was bolted, and torqued, I hit the prop blade, and it went right into gear. Does this seem right? If anybody has the time, and or inclination, could I get a little schooling on how these motor gears work??

Thanks to anybody that can help.

So, have you got the phillips head pivot screw back in? If not, you may--if you are lucky--be able to fiddle around with the shift rod enough to get the holes aligned to insert the pin. If not, sorry but you'll have to take it back apart. Next time, put it in forward gear before assembling.

Forgive me for being so ignorant, but which pin are you referring to? Also, with this type of setup, does that mean if you stall out the motor while in gear, you are up the creek? Thanks.

The pivot screw is the Phillips head screw that goes on to the shift fork, a wishbone looking assembly, your pivot screw inserts through this assy allowing it to shift the clutch dog into forward, neutral, and reverse.

if the pivot screw is not correctly installed it will not shift, stuck in one gear.

Like F.R. said you may get lucky and get it inserted, I never have been that lucky had to tear them back apart/

you mentioned you bumped it while assembling it? It may just need to inspect your connection at the shift rod to make sure you have it installed correctly, also disconnect your shift cable and try to shift it just using the linkage to see if it is a cable or linkage problem.

if you do not have a manual, strongly recommend you get one, it will save you a hundred times over the amount you spend on the manual, and without the manual you will not know when or how to do the proper preventative maintenance required to keep that old 33 going.

Thanks a million gents,

I do indeed have a manual, so between it, and the info you guys have provided, should be able to get it working one way or another.
