Ok, i have asked everyone I know around that is good with boats and no one can tell me anything. I have a mercruiser 5.7 with thunderbolt V ignition system. The boat was starting up pretty good and running until it got up to temp and tben it wouldn't start. I changed distributor cap rotor button, plugs, and I put a new coil on there after I seen it looked horrible but none of this has helped. It actually got worse. Now it will crank and u can make a little loop and come back to dock and it will quit when u bring throttle back to neutral. It's seems to be flooding because u can start it if u hold throttle down all the way. And there is a strong smell of gas coming. I took carb apart and cleaned float and everything. Should my next step be to have the carb rebuilt or is there something I'm missing. Also I have a 21 pitch prop. Whwat rpm should boat run wide open. Thanks for all the help in advance.

best to get a maintenance manual for the engine. That will have the spec's you are looking for and lots of illustrations, etc.

Check to see if the" thunderbolt" ignition amplifier is crapping out on you.

Sounds like a carb problem to me......I would get a rebuild kit or have it rebuilt if you haven't done one before. In my signature below on page 12 is a rebuild on the Webber 4bbl on a 5.7 if that helps you.

Re: please help 5.7 mercruiser

I had the carb rebuilt and now it starts up fine when cold but as soon as it gets up to temp it is hard to start you have to pump the gas and hold it down and it rolls over a bunch before starting. Also it doesn't seem to be running at the correct RPMs it will.only get up to about 3900 and it was running at 4200-4300. It has a 14.75x21 stainless prop. Shouldn't this boat be running around 4500rpms? And what is the next thing I should change to get it starting.
