Don't worry about serial#
Just go to that site and pull up the year and any gear case will help.

You need to remove the gear housing cover, drain the gear lube so you can see in, line everything up and put the pin back in.

Jerry, I already have to cover assembly plastic piece. What I'm having a hard time is seeing how everything should line up on the shift linkage. I'm going to get the cover assembly now.

Thanks

I'm getting ready to go out and fool with this thing. I have the part.is there a way to tell if I have the linkage lines up right before it goes back on the boat?

I fooled with it for an hour and cannot seem to get the linkage lined up with the pivot pin.

For shift linkage, put the shifter in neutral, put the shift rod in neutral, adjust the end of the shift cable to go on the shifter holding pin on bracket on the block.

The lower unit is removed from upper housing....the pivot pin is removed.....I'm trying to figure out where the shift linkage needs to be to line up the hole on said linkage to insert pivot pin.if that makes any sense.

Oh, take the shift linkage cable off,the post so you can move the shift rod up and down with your hand., Then get a punch and gently push the punch in while your slowly moving the shift rod up and down to maybe find the hole for the pivot pin. It's very hard to find the hole for the pivot pin.
If you can't find the hole drain LU gear lube, drop the lower unit, remove water pump housing, remove gear housing, shine a light down there and line up the hole for the pivot pin, this is hard to do too.A guy on here lowered the gear shift arm down with string, to line up the hole. HF has very long needle nose plyers that may be long enough to reach down there. Check the driveshaft seal for leaks,

Tom, I appreciate the response.I have everything removed nessacary.but I can't seem to wiggle the shift shaft the right way to line it up..it acts like it's in a bind or caught on something.....I cannot rotate it to the left at all.....and can't remove the whole linkage and coupler there's no room to pull it out....

Ok Good news I got the pivot pin reinstalled into the shift linkage.....but doesn't seem like it's changed any? Pull up or down on linkage can't "feel" a click or hear change?

The way you tell is try turning the propeller. If the linkage is correctly attached, the when you pull the shift rod all the way up, the propeller should be hard to turn indicating that it is in gear (either forward or reverse I can't remember). When you move the shift rod half way down between the upper most and lowest position, the propeller should turn very easily indicating that it is in neutral. If you push the shift rod all the way down, the propeller should be hard to turn indicating that it is in gear, either forward or reverse.

If nothing changes when yo move the shift rod, I would imagine that the gear shift yoke, part number 48 is not properly engaged with the shift fork, part number 25. The shift yoke sits on a groove on the end of the shift pin, part number 47. The shift fork has two notches that engage the two pins on each side of the shift yoke. Moving the shift rod up and down makes the shift pin move backwards and forwards. It could also mean that the shift yoke has fallen off of the shift pin. A little dab of grease will help keep it in place. See diagram below.

Here is a drawing of the set up. Moving the Shift rod up and down, makes the shift coupler or shift fork pivot on the pivot bolt (the one you accidentally removed) and the two pins on each side of the shift yoke are egaged in the two slots cut into the shift coupler. The picture is a bit mis-leading because the two slots are actually pointing more in a downward position during normal operation, so it moves the shift are or shift pin back and forth when you move the shift rod up and down. The only time the parts are pictured as in the drawing is when you are putting it together.

Thank you for the response very helpful..the prop spins freely both ways...so I'm assuming it's in neutral?

Well went to the barn this morning when I got home from work and Definatley not engaging forward or reverse when pulling up or down on shift rod...gun spins freely.so I'll fool with it this afternoon and try and remove that shift yoke.

If the prop spins freely both in forward and reverse the yoke is not in place either in the shift arm or in the shift coupler.
Most likely it is down in the bottom of the gearcase.

The best way to get it in place is to disassemble the gearcase. Remove the prop shaft, the reverse gear and then put the yoke in the slot on the shift arm with some amount of grease to kep it in place.

Then you have to put the pivo pin/bolt in the shift coupler in the gearhousing.
With the gearhousing in a wise and a bit tilted up, slide in the prop shaft with the yoke through the forward gear with one hand and with the other hand move the shift rod up or down to line up the slot in the shift coupler with the posts/pins in the yoke.

This operation requires patience and time, BUT shortcuts is no sultion in this case.
