Pilot Shaft

Hi guys. This is my first iBoats post. I have been trolling the site for a while, and you all give some great advise. I have a 1982 johnson 25hp tiller motor model J25RLCNB. Just bought it a few months ago. Runs strong, but has one issue. The pilot shaft is broken at the very top. It appears that the prior owner must have run it in to something and it sheared the top off. Anyhow, i found out that the part is no longer avaible and N.L.A. Its part number 0326315 i think. Do you all know a place that sells used OMC parts? Any one have one they are looking to sell? Anyone know if one can be machined? Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Pilot Shaft

Excellent. Thank you for the info. If I do find the shaft, how hard is it to swap out? Meaning do i need to disassemble a large portion of the unit in order to replace? I looked in my Seloc repair manual, but it does not address. Thanks again

Anyone? I think I have found someone with the part, but not sure how hard it will be to replace it. I will have weigh weither the cost of the part, plus if I have to have it professionally installed will be worth it. I am mecahniclly inclined as I have lots of experience working on cars and small engines, just not boats or boat motors. Thank you

Re: Pilot Shaft

Haven't done an '82, but a generic answer would be remove the vertical throttle shaft from the side of the powerhead, and the fuel hose. Then undo the upper and lower rubber mounts. Then the whole thing should swing back, up and away from the steering bracket.

Re: Pilot Shaft

That is great news. Doesn?t sound that hard. Another quick question for you then. I want to do the job correctly and keep this motor going for a long time. I bought the Seloc manual , but it does not address a job like this. Is there anther manual I can buy that would have more info? Know of a good place to get one? Sorry for all the knob questions, but this is my first outboard and boat for that matter.

Re: Pilot Shaft

In all fairness, I should say that the procedure I described may not be applicable to your motor. It all depends on whether or not you can access the nut on the upper front rubber mount and whether or not the part is slotted to come off once the nut is off. If not, the powerhead has to be removed. That makes it a considerably bigger job. But it isn't the end of the world.

Re: Pilot Shaft

Get yourself an OMC factory service manual. Those Seloc's are useless.

F_R, you were correct. The pilot shaft was not hard to get out of that motor. I just undid the lower and upper mounts. The upper is sloted, so that did help. Had the shaft out in about 30min. Thanks for the all the help guys. Was able to find the part and will be able to replace it, thanks to your advise. She will be ready for the spring fish after this repair. Thanks again.

The Seloc does seem useless. But didn't know that at the time of purchase. Regret wasting the money on it now. Where is the best place to get a OMC factory manual? I have done general searches and looked on e-bay, all i can find is the Seloc and other Seloc type manuals.
