Re: pet dilemma , what would you do?

We humans sometimes think we can fix everything with money, but the sad truth is we all have our time here and as we age just being alive doesn't always mean it's best. Same thing applies to pets, thinking your buddy with actually enjoy more of his/her time here may not be realistic. Only being honest with yourself will let you know the answer to that. I wish you well.

I would hate to see a family member suffer, or a friend, Our pets are both so you must decide, what do I want to put this good friend, and family member through.

View attachment 213261 my 13 year old german shepherd isnt well, vet says an operation may help, but at his age, its iffy. hes a wonderful dog, and still has a bit of pup in him now and then. should i put him through surgery, or do the "other" thing, so hes not suffering?

I have had many GSDs, mostly two at a time, because it is so hard when they go.
You don't say what the operation is about, but you indicate that he is suffering.
He will let you know. Watch him closely for signs. If he is vocal about the pain, put him down.
Sorry,

i cant express how much i appreciate everyone sharing their thoughts and experiences with me. after much discussion, and a sleepless night, i just cant not try helping him with surgery. if i had him "put down" tomorrow, i'd take that decision to my grave, never knowing if the surgery would have gave him a few more happy years, if i keep it status quo, hes just a zombie on meds

It reminds me of playing God. And I, for one am not very good at it. It hurts to watch them suffer and it hurts to watch them go.

Re: pet dilemma , what would you do?

oh boy - I had tto do that to my 4 yr old wolf/aussie like 10 yrs ago, she had been poisoned twice, internal bleeding etc , NOTHING would have saved her at the time, had to let them put her down while I talked to her, stroked her head etc, she did have a peaceful look and like she understood, still makes me misty, oh and did I cry like a little kid the next few days........it HURT but was right thing to do - probably why it took me 8 ish years to get another - there is a dog heaven I think, dont take crazy expensive measure just cuz YOU may miss him/her, let them go to end their pain etc = God this is TOUGH!!! My thoughts with you , Heinz

That was YOUR decision so that makes it the right decision. Sorry for those that disagree but there is no price tag on love.
My GSD is family so I would do the same for her too. Bless you for caring.

This is just my opinion, but I think you are making the right decision. You need to give your dog that chance of recovery, if not for any other reason, then for your own piece of mind knowing you did everything you could for him. I have had many great dogs and I have a great one now however, your story reminds me of one I had a few years back named Thumper. Thumper was about 12 years old when she became sick and needed surgery. This surgery was to cost $1500.00 and I was saying no way. My wife, on the other hand, was saying oh yes we will get this done regardless of costs. She explained, we need to pay for the piece of mind knowing that we did all we could to make the dog better. When it was all said in done that dog lived another 4 1/2 years! And some of the best years of her life on top of it. Eventually, Thumpers time was up and it was obvious. I took her to the same Vet that performed the surgery 4 1/2 years earlier and the Vet confirmed, there was nothing we could do but pet her and say goodby. While still in the Vets office old Thumper was fading fast. The Vet seen how emotional my family was over it all and he started getting emotional himself. I explained to the Vet how good a job he did 4 years earlier and how his efforts gave Thumper and her family 4 more great years. I told him how grateful we were for that at which time the Vet started to fall apart. You'll know when it's time for your pet to go and I can tell, you know this isn't that time. Good luck to both you and your best friend. Isn't it amassing how they can make you feel so alive.

what was the issue to begin with?mine(dogs) was a large tumor on belly .worked good for 1 year then it was back worse than before .glad the dog is ok just remember he,s old and issues will arise more frequently now, after all in our terms he,s a geriatric.looks like he,s a little ticked off at the world right about now, lol.

He definitely looks worth saving. GSD are almost human. My GSD loves and protects me and follows my grand children everywhere, keeping them away from the road and the pond. You can not put a price on that.
