I'm restoring a aluminum 16' runabout,Cherokee. The hull looks similar to a Starcraft super sport. The boat has the original 1961 75HP Johnson on it.I have completely stripped the boat and am waiting on paint should be here monday. Can anyone tell me what kind of performance I can expect, the number of people I can carry, and the max engine size.I won't hold you liable just want a general idea. Thanks,I will post pics when I get a little farther along.

Re: performance

With a 75 that should push into the mid 40s I would think.

I have a 16' aluminum V hull with a 50 that does @ 30 GPS.

I don't know for sure but would say 75 is about all the power I would put on that, you don't say the year of the boat but assuming it is the same as the engine I would say you are there.

As to people ,there is only so many you can fit on a 16' boat and it depends, any more people can range from 120 to 400+ lbs so one of them counts as two so can't say on that one.

Vrod I cant help you with the performance of your boat but just wanted to say its a sharp one . Dont forget to take plenty of pictures of the restoration and start a thread on it . I have all fiberglass boats myself . A 1960 Cutter runabout , A 1964 Crestliner runabout and a 1974 Larson bowrider :D. I like the classics myself.

Keep in mind that the older outboards were rated HP at the powerhead and the newer ones are at thr prop...... there is almost a 10-15% loss..... so a 65 hp of yesteryear was actually 55-57 hp at the prop.

Re: performance

[ Thanks for the kind words,I like old stuff too.It seems to have a lot of character and after almost fifty years I thought the old girl deserved a break. Thanks for reminding me about the hp ratings I think I read that Mercs were reated at the prop back then that's why they were faster.I'm going to restore the engine and keep it even if I buy a new one.I'd hate to break them up completely after almost fifty years.I'll start a new thread tomorow for the Cherokee restoration .Thanks for everyones help.here's a pic after paint.

Or 5-6, in really skimpy bikini's...those swimsuits are heavy and over-rated.
