I use Paypal only when I buy/sell on ebay, or on a few websites that only use that as a payment method. Here's the problem:
Used to be I could have Paypal use my credit card as the primary funding source. Now, when I buy, they always attempt to charge my credit union account associated with my Paypal account first, and then go to my credit card (CC I use for that is owned by a different bank). I never keep a balance in my Paypal-associated credit union account because of some of what I consider to be the unfair practices Paypal sometimes uses with sellers on ebay, and I don't want them to be able to freeze any of my funds if I get into a dispute with a buyer. I always withdraw the money as soon as it is deposited.
When they attempt to get funds from my credit union account to fund a payment I make, of course it's empty, and my credit union returns it to them unpaid. Then Paypal will charge my credit card. Well, apparently my credit union doesn't like that because then they charge me a $25 fee because of an ACH attempt on "insufficient funds".
So is there any way to avoid Paypal going that route first, and have them go directly to my credit card? They used to do that, but no more, and I can't find any account setting at Paypal to set that up. Paypal says that if there are insufficient funds in my account for a payment, they automatically go to the backup funding credit card and they do, but man, I use it so infrequently to pay, it's getting expensive when I forget!!
Maybe I'll either have to remember to add money to the account each time or something, but that's a pain.
