Does anybody have a good way to get rid of chipmunks ?
I've got hundreds living in and around my wood pile in my garage. They are destructive little things. Can't put any food/garbage unless it's in a tight container, and the smell from them sometimes is just awful. I've tried all kinds of products, but they're still there. I thought of trying to trap them and remove them somewhere far away, but my neighbour said that's a waste of time. He tried it and they still came back next year. He used an industrial poison, that is no longer available here in Ontario. I've tried 2 different poisons myself but they just eat it and it seems not to do them any harm.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: Chipmunks

Go get a free cat somewhere:D Farms always have unwanted cats.

Not sure that cats smell any better or are less annoying than your current issue with the chipmunks though.;)

A .22 or a pellet gun work great. If you really want to test your mettle, use a bow - that is how I have been dispatching rabbits that eat the flowers in our development.

That would be a great way to get your shooting eye ready for bow season:D

I wish I had more rabbits in my yard now;)

18 will no longer eat my wife's flowers (neighbor and I have been having a bit of a contest - he uses a his pellet gun and I the bow). There are a few more to deal with yet ... empty lots and a green space across the street have multiplied them to unbelieveable numbers. But once the preditor moved in, the numbers started decreasing! :p

I agree on the cat front. I often have a cat walking across my yard. Just introduce it to that wood pile and you will have seen your last high pitched singing treo.

I had the same issues with squirrels at my cabin. I picked up a couple rat traps, put a piece of bread with peanut butter on it. They love peanut butter. In your case pick up a half a dozen traps and a jar of kraft peanut butter. If you gonna kill 'em at least give them a good brand name peanut butter to go out on.

Oh, man! How can you not want such appealing little critters?

About a few centuries ago I was a senior camper at a boys camp in Maine. I shared a cabin with two other teens and about a dozen chipmunks. Those li'l critters were my buddies; rode around in my pockets.

My cabin mates didn't like them and put mothballs around their favorite places. End of the chipmunks.

When I lived in VA I had a couple of Siamese cats who much preferred the local chipmunks to regular cat food. I was forever picking up chipmunk heads and feet on the porch.

A Siamese cat is really a different animal than tabby housecat. I would try a Siamese or two if you can stand their annoying yowls.

Rat poison works good.
I'll never forget the time as a kid I saw one die from D-Con.
My grandma kept a trash can full of bird seed in the garage and she had D-con at the base of the trash can to deter critters.
I was standing in the kitchen window which faced the driveway.
All of a sudden this chipmunk came running out of the garage and made a big circle in the driveway and then the circle got smaller and smaller and smaller until he reached the center, then he just flopped over on his back with his legs straight up in the air.....deader than a door nail.
It was like something straight out of a cartoon.
I was about 10 years old and thought it was hilarious.

Re: Chipmunks

Poison is too dangerous and will kill anything.

I used to dispatch them with 22 shorts as a kid but today I would much rather put a smear of peanut butter on a rock and watch the frolic.

Uhhhh move the woodpile! :D
