patching thru hull hole

I just removed my thru hull fitting for my livewell on my fiberglass boat and need to patch over the area. The hole is about 1.5", my plan is to feather the sides on the top and bottom and lay about 5-6 layers of csm and 2 layers of woven roving in the middle. Is this a suitable way to repair this? How much overlap on the sides of the hole do I need? I really want to fix this so it is just as strong as the main hull because I take my boat 15 miles offshore and don't need any surprises when I am way off. Thanks in advance for the help.

That will work fine, just go out a few inches.

Yes your plan is okay. Drive a dowel into the hole coated with resin first...... you can actually fill the area with a peanut butter mix.... fair it out and do a gel coat repair over that and it should be gone for good.
