Our local school board has just decided to hold school on Saturdays for kids that skip classes during the week. Staying after school is too big of a hassle for them and their parents.

My take, I see no reason at all for my taxes to go up to give a second or third chance to kids that decide to skip classes. I fully agree we should give our kids the BEST OPPORTUNITIES in the world when it comes to education, but if you throw that opportunity aside, that is your problem and I should not be asked to pay for it.

Rant over?

I see no reason for them to exclude the ones who didn't skip:D

I'm sure most parents wouldn't mind if their child went to school 6 days a week if they were compensated with something like an hour shorter school day.

The problem with many of todays kids is they have self entitlement issues and feel their life is theirs to live before they have gotten a job and paid their own way,and do not feel the need to listen to someone who has experienced the wonders of what life has to offer.

Don't get me wrong or misunderstand me. I am a firm believer in questioning authority but you don't just do it on a whim. You need to do your research and be informed prior to saying something like "YOU ARE WRONG" or "I DON'T HAVE TO" because you might find out you were wrong or that you just might have to ( no, I was not a model child and yes, I learned a lot of things the hard way and painful lessons they were)

Why should the state spend more money on my neighbors child for education because he wanted to be defiant and not go to school today.

In short, if there is not an impairment that is beyond the controls of the child or parent, then the parent should be held accountable for their childs actions and pay for these extra sessions.

Out here the teachers are paid salary. :)
So it doesn't matter if the SKIPPERS have to go in on Saturdays. :D. Theres no extra cost to the school.

Its their weekend that they are wasting. :)

I thought that was the point. That way the parents will get upset and make the kids do the right thing. It all comes back to poor parenting.
My youngest girl missed some school a couple weeks ago. Man she was made when I gounded her for a month. But what ever, I bet she will think twice before skipping again.
And yes, I make every day of it stick, no boyfriend, phone, one hour of TV only and no video games, straight home after school and no friends over. Her room is clean for the first time in I cant remeber when.

She knows not to mess up either, I do math like my father did.
If you mess up when grounded, I take the original month, double that to 2, add the original back on, and start over again.
1 goes to 3 real fast.

Which is all too often the case today. If there is no financial penalty to the indiscretion then there has been no consequences to the bad deed. Almost as if there is no sense of guilt unless there is a financial toll attached to it.

Start charging the parents and the dodgers will be in school.

If they mandate parents of the skippers need to accompany the truants on Sat, I bet the problem would get solved. Parental accountability has all but disappeared.

That's the best suggestion yet!

IMO Uneducated youth are far more of a burden to society in that condition.

Man I'm glad we homeschool our kids. We don't have to deal with anything like that. Of course, almost everyday is a school day for us; just not for 6-8 hours at a stretch.

Hey as anyone looked at Japan where it IS the norm to go to school on saturdays and thier school season is a full 10 months 6 days a week! Also so thier kids can get ahead of the rest of the world they send them to summer school for extra classes so they WILL be that much ahead of the rest of the world. Any wonder we in North America are so far behind that part of the world with our school sysems. We need to get a better grip on how our schools are run so we don't get too far behind the rest of the world. Just look at all the smart people you see in Universities. 80% of them are from another country and they are also at the top of thier class as well. Don't you think maybe we should wake up and smell the coffee and take a REAL GOOD look at what we want for our countries to stay at the forfront of technology!!!

School on Saturday? Might as well, they have sports on weekends. I was surprised when my 5yo granddaughter showed up with homework to be done over the Thanksgiving holiday. I don't have any answers, I just pay the taxes.

You still are "turning on the lights" and everything that goes with it an extra day a week.
The janitors & maintenance staff are there on Saturdays

So where is this extra cost coming from ????.

Are you guys out there still in a one room school house . :D

Agreed... Even on Sundays most of them lights are on. Sounds more like a scare tactic being implemented to me.

What does it teach the skippers or any of the kids for that matter about the real world if when they skip they can make it up on another day. If I call of sick or just decide not to show up to work one day I cant make it up another day. I also agree that the time in schools are not used wisely.

I have to admit the ladies are a bit easier but when my daughter did 1st wind up with detention I pretty much let it slide the first time. But the second time I being the dutiful parent when to retrieve her on time and sat in the car"following her as she walked the mile and 1/2 home" she didn't do it again :D Guess I wasn't too far off she graduated 5 years later National honor society.

I think most school systems are NOT run properly to benifit the students. They all look at the bottom line $$$$$ not the students needs so much. If we could change the system to look more at what the students needs are rather then the what it costs to run the school then we'd have a real smart student base to choose from for out countries needs. Rather then relying on off shore people who seam to have all the Doctoral/science degrees. Who knows maybe some day we would be at for front of the world when it comes to smart people per capita. Not so as it stands right now, we are running a far distant 3rd- 4th place and looking up from the bottom :(

Do we realy want to let the rest of the world (2nd and 3rd world countries) to pass us academiclly here in the wertern area? We had better take a real close look at where we what to be on this planet in the next 10+ years. Do we want to be know as the part of this planet that is always at war or do we want to get smarter, fighting less with weapons and more with wit!!
This way there will be far less human cassualties. God bless our troups where ever they are!

Too bad we culturally don't value smart people and academic success. Maybe things would change. We lionize and worship jocks, pro sports and other knuckle-dragging crap and we wonder why things are not different? Why on earth would a kid want to be a "nerd", "geek" or otherwise be put down because he's smart?
People are like a damned bucket of blue crabs. Ever wonder why you don't have to put a lid on the bucket? Every time one tries to crawl out of the bucket the other ones drag him back down.....
