Painting on a budget - Only painting the cap

I have a 21ft Supra (1985). I am going to either paint or have it painted over the winter. I took it to a local shop and they gave me an estimate of 400.00 to paint the cap, and from rubrail about 7inches down. The price isn't to bad....but I have some other minor things that need to be done to my boat, so I was thinking about doing it myself. I know I can do it and make it look good, but I just need a link to where I can buy some good paint and primer....and of course some good tips. Am I crazy to think I could do this for under a 100.00? Thanks for the help!

Re: Painting on a budget - Only painting the cap

My story... Needed the red stripe repainted... Automotive base coat clear coat was $130 for just the paint!

I went with
1 qt Rustoleum marine primer $18
1 qt Rustoleum marine topside paint $18
tape 'n plastic covering $25
paint thinner $9
grease remover $9
about 3 hours

Supplies add up!!

That rustoleum really laid down well (air sprayer) and is very glossy. Check into it!

Wow your boat looks great....after reading numerous post, I think I am going with the rustoleum marine topside paint and primer. Does this paint need something called "magic" I think its a hardner? Or am I ok with sanding, primer, then sand again, first coat, light sand...then final coat? Thanks for the help!

Re: Painting on a budget - Only painting the cap

I am doing my hull right now and used 4 quarts of topside rustolem, at my lowes they cost 11.70 a quart for paint and primer. bought a gallon of acetone for 18, brushes and rollers 20ish. and some sweat equity because i laid it wrong first go...so if i can do the hull under 100 you should be able to the cap. Woodonglass has excellent info in his thread on painting with rustoleum

Both prices are way under budget !

I can not see a shop painting a 21 foot cap for 400 bucks..

Re: Painting on a budget - Only painting the cap

When I first read the thread I started typing and said about the same thing, I had to go do something else and it was deleted though.

My cost on materials may come to $400.00 or more to do a good job, then add labor.

To be fair I've never used Rustoleum and only used one single part paint, it worked OK, but there's a huge difference in performance between a single part, and two part paint. I always use a very good (and pricy) two part paint when doing something like this, because like YD, I can't afford to have it fail.

For a DIY'er on a 26 year old boat, I'm confident that the Rustoleum and the added Acrylic Enamel hardener will perform quite well. As always in painting it's all in the prep. Proper cleaning, sanding and primer application should yield a very high quality end result. While it might not be a "Pro" job it will be durable, inexpensive, easy to touch up and again for a DIY'er easy to apply by Roll n' Roll or HVLP Spraying. But I am very prejudiced towards Rustoleum and addicted to being CHEAP!!!!!

personally if you can get in writing that the finished job from the shop would be $400, I'd jump on it!! I guess if that's what they bid it at, their loss would be your gain :) Way underbid and they'll take it in the shorts; materials alone I would guess to be close to that.. Might want to see if they have any previous jobs you could look at to judge quality.. My guess either a first timer looking to get some projects out there to drum up biz, or possibly a scam??? Just speculating..

Re: Painting on a budget - Only painting the cap

It is a good local shop, I have seen the previous work it all looks great. WOODONGLASS, I have read your post, and your job looks great......and very inspiring, I know it is a huge part to make sure that the prep work is done and done right. So that is one main goal. I also was able to watch a bunch of video's to use the brush after rolling which helps feather out the "orange peal". So I will take my time, practice before starting on my boat. I guess I must be crazy thinking that my price for 100.00 is good, cause I highly doubt I will be using more than a quart to paint what I need painted. I think the rustoleum was 16.00, hardner was 12/14.00(can't remember), primer was 15.00, I haven't priced out rollers, tape and good brushes yet...I believe it will turn out well and within budget. I will post some pictures as soon as I get her done, then repost within a year so you guys can see how well it stood up over the season. Thanks for the help!

Second that info Two part vs single stage is not even a question....I can bump a dock at 5 mph and the paint takes the hit with no damage. Perfection is now being sold for 60 a quart and is as good as it gets. The paint was done by a novice notice the poor tape lines..But the finish is uncanny for a novice

Supra Front.jpgSupra Side.jpgHere are a couple of pictures of what I am working with. They aren't close ups, but this is all I had on hand plus the boat is covered at the moment. Thanks

Thanks for the "Bone". Now we'll be able to see how good you do. Are you "Roll n' Roll'n" or HVLP Spraying?

Yes .. thank you for the pics :) .

Now when you say spray the "cap and 7" below the rub rail" .. what is the cap in this instance ?

From looking at your pictures .. If that even means to the windshield for 400 bucks .. I would sublet this job out for a quality job for 4 bills ;) .

Just to R and R the hardware/pinstripe and misc pre-prep would cost 400 bucks.

Just in my professional opinion 400 bucks is gonna get you a quick scuff and spray.

Re: Painting on a budget - Only painting the cap

The parts I will be painting are.....if you see the double blue stripes below the rub rail, that will be taken off and done in one single navy strip. With the rub rail removed I will paint the top portion of the "cap", the portion above rub rail untill it rolls over to the inside of boat.....so I guess the top section. The transom and the back half has teak on the top of the rail, so that will be taken off and painted under also. It isn't all that much painting, I just want a fresh glossy look. I will be rolling, then feathering once a sectioned is rolled out. Does this make any sense, I know it does in my head.....and that doesnt say a lot? Thanks for the help.
