I have a 1448 modified v front flat bottom jon boat that I will be using to duck hunt with. When I got the boat it needed a fresh coat of paint and I was eager to make it mine, probably too eager. So I went to the hardware store and picked up copious amount of spray paint, more cans then I can remember. I cleaned the boat and removed paint where I needed to and then put a coat of aluminum specific primer on, I came back a few days later and began the painting process, again with canned spray paint. I'm sure I've already messed up by using spray cans but I did. My question is there anything that I can put over what I have painted to make it stronger or hold up longer? I would prefer something clear with a flat finish so I don't have to paint the camo again. Any help or a point in the right direction would be appreciated.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Just use what's there,....

If ya Prepped the surface right, it'll hold up for awhile, or even a Long time,...

If ya didn't prep the surface right, there's Nothin' you can put over it that'll help one ioata,....

What brand of paint did ya use,..??

I've had Great luck with Rustoleum in rattlecans,...

The question is, what do you mean by "make it stronger or hold up longer"?
If the paint is peeling, chipping or flaking off, there is nothing you can do over the top of it that will hold up any better...the basis of any good/decent paint job is in the prep...
If the paint is stuck on good and not having any problems, then a good scuffing with some 320 grit sandpaper and a fresh coat of paint over the top would work just fine...Rattle cans are fine, albeit a bit spendy, but just use flat colors...
Post up some pics of the 'problem' and maybe we can figure out a solution...

If your quickie paint job is in good shape......... you can shoot automotive clear right over it. You should dust it lightly with some adhesion promoter (which dries clear) and shoot the clear. Talk to an automotive paint store and you can get a "flattener additive" to add to the clear.

I agree with Bondo. The application of a clear coat is not necessary or desired for your application. It will only complicate the inevitable touch ups that will be required later. You WILL get scratches and chips due to the areas you will be going into with your Camo'd boat if you use it the way most Hunter/Fishermen use them. It's a lot easier to do touch ups when the paint is in it's original format and does not have a Clear Coat applied. Once the Rattle Can Paint comes to a full cure (This can take up to a Month, especially in cooler temps) it's durability will increase. I'd leave it alone and use it!!!

I used rustoleum's aluminum primer and their flat camo paint. I prepared the surface by sanding the body not all the way to the aluminum but close to it, then I wiped the whole thing down with acetone and applied the primer and then the paint. Nothing is chipping but I was very concerned when I put some stuff in the boat and the paint scratched off easily. I painted it inside back at the beginning of Jan. and it stayed in our warehouse for about three weeks. I have since moved it back home and it is outside now. I guess what I will do is wait a few more months till it gets a little warmer and allow it to keep setting up. If that doesn't work I may try to shoot a clear coat over it like was suggested.
