Anybody got any experience painting with something other than gelcoat? Used non waxed poly to build the whole boat out and now colors seem slim and I just want it black. Just need to seal the glass for curing and make it black. A painter friend thought for sure a poly based primer/sealer would work and it makes sense to me, just trying to avoid having to buy 20 quarts of neutral waxed gelcoat and a bunch of pigment. So far a great project with waaayyy more effort than money invested, but this last step might tip the scales if gelcoat is the only option. Haha

Well, black boats get really hot in the sun. Other than that I can’t help ya much. Other than that, yo shouldn’t have to seal it to get it to cure.

I would spray black gel coat with duratec 904 additive. the gel is cheap, the 904 is not. however it is still cheaper than any of the top-side paints

no need for 20 quarts (5 gallons). a single gallon will spray a 26 foot boat exterior and have extra left, 2 gallons will cover the exterior and interior
