It is plastic, I have been told that the zinc chromate is OK to use on plastic. I didn't use a WHOLE gallon of acetone on this part - meant to say that I purchased a whole gallon. I didn't use that much of it.

I would try to prime it with whatever paint system you end up using.

I didnt think you used a gallon of acetone on that little part :D

Re: Painting an Outboard - Beginner Questions

Looks pretty good to me so far. Just remember, if anything doesn't look or feel smooth, it will absolutely show up on the final finish. I had to learn that the hard way years ago. I once had a little project and as I worked the prep work up, I had real small things that I seriously thought would get filled in with the next coat or two and everything would be great. NOT! If you can feel an imperfection or even just see it but not even feel it, it will be there at the end... But you seem to be on the right tract thus far. I will follow your progress. I think it will look great... Also just remember everybody on these forums has their own recipe for success and suggest their method of arriving at that conclusion. So don’t get confused and follow your own method if well researched out. There is no one-way only to do anything.

Thanks for the input!

Second coat of primer just went on. No pics since I didn't do anything new - sanded it down with 600 grit, worked a couple bad spots out, then cleaned it with degreaser and water and sprayed. I'll have to see how this coat comes out but I may do a third coat of primer.

Just sprayed primer coat 3 - after I sanded, I wasn't happy with it so I went ahead with another coat. At this point I think 600 grit is too aggressive, so I will sand this coat with 1000 grit and move on to real paint on Wednesday! New images will be up at that point too.

600 grit is not too aggressive to prep for another prime coat.

It may be too much for a blend repair .. but not a prime profile for coatings..

The reason I say that is because while sanding on the second coat (after it cured for 48 hours) I was still breaking through to the original gray underneath in some small areas. There wasn't much correction to be done; I probably would have gotten away with 800 or 1000 grit. The surface looks perfect after the third coat, so I'll use 1000 to prep it for paint.

I'm using Moeller rattle can paint.

Sanded the last primer coat with 1000g - here you can see the final coat with the upper area sanded. Came out quite nice and ready for paint! There were some very minor corrections the 1k grit was able to handle. Then I went at it with the paint!

Here's the first coat. As you can see, the paint sprayed a lot heavier than the primer, so I'll probably need to get out the 600 grit again to clean up the heavy dripping once it dries. It does look very nice though. I'll be less liberal with the next coat.
