Wrapping up my first complete overhaul (going great btw). The paint on the powerhead was in terrible condition so I completely sanded it down to the aluminum. I have self-etching primer and all of the essentials for the paint job.

I ordered a new head for the motor and the paint on it is in excellect condition (no cracks, chips etc... its not even dirty/greasy).

So here is my question. Can I prime and paint this head WITHOUT removing the existing paint?????

THANKS

Re: paint ???

To prime it, it is best to strip it down to the bare metal and get it as clean as possible. Any oily residue will make the paint flake off. I would bead blast the head, if it was me. It'll look a lot nicer once the new paint is on

Well what I did sand down is not 100% free of paint. Some areas have paint in crevices that I cannot get to and to be honest I might not have time to bead blast the powerhead.

Will painting over existing paint cause the new paint to chip off? I understand that it will look better if its down to the bare aluminum but I asking if i can get away with it.

Re: paint ???

some hardware store paint remover and a small wire brush will clean up those tough to get at spots. (wear gloves and eye protection!)
