Re: paint?

If it was painted with residential paint, was it latex or enamel? Either case it probably should come off, because it probably wont pass an adhesion test. I am getting ready to spray my fiberglass boat soon Probably will use awlgrip, but it is upper $200's for a gallon.

Re: paint?

The new paint whatever you use has to be tested for a reaction with the existing. If no reaction it might work. Spray can paint really needs a good base, all paint for that matter. Might just want to leave it alone if you dont want to spend money on it.

What kind of boat ? fiberglass or alum..

14' cheap boat..I would probably spray paint it too. Untill you want to spend the time to strip all that house paint there is no reason to put any more money it it than is absolutely Needed :) .

Re: paint?

Roll and tip that boat. Check the price on a couple of qts of store brand marine enamel and match it to the rattle cans. Roll and tip will be superior to them in cost, quality and toughness.

Re: paint?

If you do NOT keep your boat in the water for more than two or three days at a time, then you should be able to use Rustoleum's Topside MARINE paint with good Results. It is an OIL BASED ALKYLYD. I would STRONGLY suggest that you Sand and Prime with their Recommended Primer FIRST and then do a THOROUGH was down of the boat with TSP before applying the paint. Doing this should yield good results as long as the existing paint is demonstrating good adhesion to the boat in it's existing state.

Home Depot Carries Both the Primer and the Topside Paint. Both Sell for under $20.00 per quart.

I'm just sayin...;)

Re: paint?

Hey YD, I am not sure applying any Marine Enamel over latex paint is advisable. He will likely need to sand it off. I think the use of rattle cans will look like crap and give an orange peel finish, as he tries to stretch the paint. The rattle cans have just a few oz of paint in them, at the cost of $4 each.

As for enamel primers, use what is specified on the can. Some may not require any. Store brand Marine Enamels are West Marine, US Marine etc. There are others, "Sea Gloss" is polyurethane, is pretty reasonable and is carried by my local HW store. Boats take some abuse, and that rattle trap stuff is pretty soft.

I painted my speedboat last summer with Pettit Brightside Polyurethane. Pricy stuff, but good results and no primer needed. I rolled and tipped the bottom and sides of the hull w/ good results. However, I sprayed the deck and got a super finish, much superior to the R&T. This is likely overkill for the OP, however,

Re: paint?

If it is latex he can strip it with Citristrip easy for $11. For the whole boat, buy two cans of stripper $22. Sand and paint.

Your right...

OP..I would suggest you to roll an tip some exterior latex Home Red it you dont care about the prep/expense..

The stuff might work if you TSP it...then roll it on to go have fun without buying 10 cans of spray :) ..

Im serious here...
