i assume when they say to thin 25% you would put 2 oz of thinner in 8 oz of paint or primer? is this the correct way to calculate this?

Paint mixing cups make it a breeze! The ratio is printed right on the side.

Re: paint thinning

Ayuh, 'n of course, use the thinner stated by the paint manufacturer...

Not all thinners are interchangable...

Re: paint thinning

wouldn't 8oz of material A plus 2oz of material B= 10oz of material, which would be composed of 20% material B... Have i been doing this wrong?

Re: paint thinning

the 25% is of the original paint qty i beleave. not 25% of the total volume.

Re: paint thinning

i guess it would make a differance. is the first one correct?

1 part thinner to 4 parts paint = 25% of paint volume
1 part thinner to 3 parts paint = 25% total volume

Re: paint thinning

Typically % reduction is for After you mix the paint ( paint or paint plus hardener ). So you have a gallon of paint you would add 1 qt of reducer..or 25% reduction by Volume of Mixed product.

Mixing by "part" is mixing equal parts of A,B and/or C together in equal measure ( 3:1:1 would be like 3 Qts paint 1 Qt Cat and 1 Qt reducer ).

Each Paint system is different.. What paint system are you talking about ( unless this is just a general question ) .

If you really wanted to get nuts you should be using a Zahn or other type of viscosity measuring control ;) . If doing multiple coats of reduced paint at one time..you will loose the reducer right out of the mix between coats..meaning your paint will become thicker from coat to coat. Re-reduction would be needed in this event..

Yes .. Primekote is reduced by volume ( 1 Qt to 1 Gal Mixed paint .. or your 2 oz per 8 oz of mixed paint/primekote ).

Its not mixed 3:1 its 4:1 .. 25% reduction. and yes..follow the induction time please..
