Overheating and Throttle cable question.

I have two different questions. First took boat out yesterday and it overheated. The pipes going to and from the fresh water pump were cool to touch. The pipe going from the fresh water tank(???) to the exhaust manifold was very hot to the touch. It would cool right down to 180 degrees when running about 2800 rpms. It would heat up to about 250 at about 3500 rpms. Did not go above that and as soon as it got close to 250 I slowed her right down. Would this be an impellar problem, air leak problem or totally something else? Second question my throttle cable broke yesterday. AS I was changing it I must have broke one of the electrical wires that plugs into the controller. As I pulled the broken end off the part that the wires hook to slipped out. Now I don't know how to get it to go back in. Pictures would be great to show me how that is set up. Also thanks for all the help on my stalling problem. Replaced the new points with another set and changed the coil now it runs like a champ. Well minuse the new problems

For the cooling issue, a common problem is the water hose fitting on the outdrive. It becomes corroded and allows air to enter. It typically is OK when at lower speeds since the fitting is still under water. When you get up on plane, it's out of the water and starts sucking air. Unfortunately, just looking at it with the hose attached doesn't always show a problem. The hose has to come off to see the damage.

Is that where the chrome pipe goes into the outdrive? Is this pretty easy to change out?

If the chrome pipe you're talking about is inside the boat, that's not it. The fitting I'm talking about is on the outdrive itself just below the u-joint bellows and is connected to an "S" shaped hose. The chrome fitting is part of the suction side though.

ANY air in-leakage on the suction side will cause a problem, but that fitting is a known problem and is considered a routine maintenance item for replacement.

Pirate you the man. Found the piece on the back and it is WAY bad. It is missing a chunk about the width of my thumb. I think my parts dealer is going to put me on his christmas card list for how parts I have bought from him lately

Start another thread for that problem. Otherwise comments get lost and a single thread gets too confusing. Besides, I suspect you may find out that you'll have more questions on replacing the water neck fitting and the things you find when you remove the upper gearbox.

This is where boats start getting more expensive and unforgiving of lack of maintenance.

You can get most parts here on iboats. They pay for the forum so it's a good thing to support the internet store when possible.

Wanted to give you a heads up on other common problems. If the water neck fitting is that corroded, it's likely that other maintenance may have been missed. That means u-joints and bellows may need to be replaced and that there may have been water in the driveshaft bearings and in the outdrive.

The best way to identify leaks in the outdrive is to perform a pressure test before you take it apart. That way, you'll know about leaking o-rings and gaskets beforehand so you can order the replacement parts.
