Re: overheated my kicker

after a quick search, 140 is what I'm wanting to see, wonder if I should oil the cylinders and retest? if 100 is bad why does it start so easy, seems to run good:confused:

Re: overheated my kicker

ok, so I just read in the top secret file I was supposed to warm it up first:facepalm: :der: I'm a master certified automotive tech, sometimes feel like a master idiot:doh: maybe try again tomorrow, but I think I will just order my vernotherm and gasket, I was waiting to see if I needed other stuff too, ie head gasket, rings

nah, you just worry too much. Stick the t.stat in and run it to make sure it runs at temp. (rule of "thumb", unless you want to get technical with melt sticks etc etc). Then check compression. It will be higher, and if it's dead on even like it is now, you're done.

it is dead on even, but 100 seemed low, then I thought maybe because its freezing outside

100 psi isn't too bad. What you are looking for is even. When I first got my 1960 3 hp is was at 85psi and it ran great, lot of power and idled like a dream. I decarbed and ended at about 90/95. Runs good, don't worry about the compression unless below 90 or so. 100 cold is a decent reading. She runs right? :) sounds good too.

Re: overheated my kicker

No need to worry about the compression at all.-----Those newer motors have a wee hole in the cylinder wall to the exhaust.-----Lower compression for start-up.---Bleed off exhaust for less noise at idle.

Re: overheated my kicker

installed the therm today, looked in the housing with a flashlight found a vane from the old impeller:facepalm:, fished it out with a coathanger wire. got it running after several tries, when i remembered I had the safety lanyard unhooked for the compression test:doh: once I hooked that back up, it started immediately  ran nice and cool:cool:

Re: overheated my kicker

If it got hot enough to blister the paint, I would replace the exhaust cover gaskets and check the head for flatness and replace the head gasket.

Another option is just to snug up the bolts a bit as appropriate, as mentioned earlier. I would go with that option first and see how it runs for you (IMO).

I was worried about the head gasket and if it had warped the head, that's why I did the compression test, it still runs and sounds great, I think I will run it a good bit next time I go out and keep an eye on it, and if anything seems amiss I will shut it off and switch back to the main engine. I would probably be more picky if it where the only motor and I might get stranded

Re: overheated my kicker

The compression won't be bad until the head gasket leaks, then it's got water in the cylinders and may scuff your cylinder walls. The exhaust cover can also warp and leak water into your ex ports, causing same results. It's not a hard job, and something you might put on order and replace as soon as possible. A figure 8 motion on a pane of glass with 400 grit sandpaper should flatten it out nicely. It may be fine, but those are 2 areas that fail a LOT on overheated motors. It would be an even better idea to check your plugs after each run out and look for beads of water or milkiness on the plugs. If so, fix 'em both and be done with it.

I know you are right, I will get the gaskets next time I place an order. I spend every day fixing other peoples vehicles, its a living:noidea:, I am terrible when it comes time to fix my own stuff:redface-new:. I was actually proud of myself for doing the stat, was so tempted to just go without one. heck I even changed the impellers and gear lube:faint2:, my tow rig has started leaking at the clutch slave and I just been topping off the fluid for the last 2 months, I will fix it but after the polar vortex goes away, but then I will want to be boating:juggle: and the wife wants the porch rebuilt into a sunroom, her car needs work, my mustang engine needs overhauled, my bike needs carb rebuilt, the 4 wheeler needs the same and its trans is acting up, trees need pruned, driveway needs sealed, the soffet, gutters, fence and deck needs sealed/stained, my 12' tinny is leaking, the pool will need started up, then the hot tub, then she wants me to install a new central air unit, and I just want to be on the river. I might just run away from home before the grass needs mowed

Re: overheated my kicker

Dang, and I thought MY project list was too full! Indeed there are other things to worry about! Seems the more toys a fellow has, the more he works on them. Even new ones need tinkering on from time to time! Relative/neighbor boat seem to ALWAYS need fixing.......
Good luck with the fish----seems like it won't ever get to be spring!!
