I posted a week ago about my motor which is a 94merc 125 outboard. The overheat alarm came on when I was at wot and I didn't hear it right away-quite windy out. Anyway water pump was bad and I replaced it and now motor runs fine. Had it out all day yesterday. Should I worry that I ran it at all with the alarm going off. I did shut it down when I heard the alarm and started it back up a few times to see if water was shooting out. Like I said performed flawless yesterday but should I be worried at all from running with the alarm on. Thanks

Re: Overheat Alarm ?

The alarm is there for a reason. It's job is to let you know when the engine has gotten hot, not when the engine has destroyed itself.

Generally, the alarm is set to come on between the hot and overheated stage. On my Johnson 150, it usually runs between 170-180, depending on use. I picked up a plastic bag one time and the alarm came on at approx 205 degrees. The manual advised overheated is roughly 220+.

If your engine ran fine after switching out the water pump, I seroiusly doubt you did any damage. Most engines have enough research and development built in them to withstand more punishment than the average boater hands out.

Read the Mercury site and look at the R&D that goes into an angine before it's ever put on the market.

Like others have said, if your boat ran fine after the water pump rebuild, then your are probably OK. If you want to do additional verification, then do a compression test. All cylinders should be within 10% of each other.
