Outdrive swap

I was approached by a fellow boater at my dock and he asked me if i was interested in a trade, my 20 foot 87' larson dc 190 which has a 3.7 mercruiser engine with a alpha one outdrive in it. He has a 24 foot 89' four winns vista that has a ford 460 big block in her with a OMC outdrive. Can someone out there give me some info on if i should trade or not. Would it be worth it or not? I do know his boat starts right up and purrs like a kitten....

NOOOOOOOO..... An OMC for a Merc???? Never. You do realize that OMC parts are scarce. They went out of business in around 94 and stopped making replacement parts. Stick with your Merc.

Ok, let me ask you this. Is there any other outdrive out there I can swap out for the OMC, like maybe a SX?

I"m not an OMC expert but I would think that that 460 would be mated up to a King Cobra drive so the answer would be no. There may be a way to Frankenstein an engine to make some thing work, but will it be reliable????. I'm sure Don or one of the other guys will chime in but if you are looking to re-power an OMC, you are looking at extensive transom work as the cutout isn't the same. My suggestion is look for another boat.

Nothing replaces the King Cobra. Parts are almost non existent for the KC. Even the impellers are almost impossible to find for the Kings.

I agree with Don. I have the King Cobra and IF you can find parts you will pay out the arse.
