i just bought a 1990 maxum with a 3.0l 130 hp. got a mercruiser alpha 1 with a 1:98r...serial number is 0c827796(believe this is a gen 1???) the upper part of the outdrive is bad. the "pinion and carrier" gears are stripped out. the lower unit feels smooth and engages to reverse and forward. are the upper units are geared the same? like for a 1:84 final drive upper unit the same as a 1:94??? would a 1:84 final drive work is this boat or would i be giving myselft problems???? got anything laying around? need one...:)

Re: outdrive and final drive question

If you stripped out the upper then you will certain have (or soon develop) problems in the lower as they share the same oil.
Being a cheap boat your best bet is to order a complete replacement SEI drive for 1300 bucks. (can be had right here on Iboats).

To answer your gearing question. The gears in the lower are all the same. Its the gears in the upper that determine the ratio. You need a 2.0-1 (or 1.98) for a 3.0.
