Sorry to hear about the outboard. You can take comfort in that they wont get much use out of it. They cant get it registered.

Re: Outboard stolen from my back yard

First of all I agree about protecting your property. What really ticks me off is this story...My neighbor catches a car thief in the act trying to get his classic Mustang. Neighbor clobbers the thief with an aluminum baseball bat several times. Short story of a long one is this...The thief is hospitalized with a broken shoulder, 2 broken fingers and a severe concussion. Both neighbor and thief are charged with assault and battery ONLY my neighbor is also charged with ATTEMPTED MURDER!! Neighbor is forced into a plea bargain (otherwise facing 20 years) and gets 5 years probation. The Thief is charged with assault and burglary, convicted and sentenced to 2 years prison time. My point is this....Think twice about shooting somebody that is trying to steal from you. The laws today are pretty messed up and the "good guys" do not always come out winners :(

you really dont have shoot someone to kill or harm real bad. I worked for a horse riding stable years back and he would always put a few horses out to pasture every nite to graze. Seems someone would always come in and steal one to ride for the nite. Well what he did was open the shot gun shells and fill them with rock salt instead let me tell you knew who you shot in minutes could hear them screaming for blocks away

Kiwi

I an an ex Detective Inspector, NZ Police now resident in the Malborough Sounds. An oldie but a goodie is to advertise in the Trade & Exchange or local classifieds for a motor of exactly the same vintage and configuration. Nominate cash buyer and you might be surprised what turns up. Use a cell phone number as a contact so the number does not give the game away. I have some sympathy with the "Insured by Winchester" syndrome but NZPD have a very biased view of this philosophy. Good Luck.

Hi Gary

Welcome to Iboats. It's great to have another New Zealander on board. I think there's about 4 or 5 of us now.

Marlborough Sounds is a beautiful part of the country - especially for boating I think.

Thanks for the excellent idea... I'm going to do excactly that - a lot more proactive than what I've been doing... Thanks again.

Welcome Gary, great to see another Kiwi on the board. I don't yetknow if you run a boat but this has to be one of the best places for advice or to give it!
You make me envious living in the sounds. There isn't a prettier place. My grandmother was from that area!
Ross

Re: Outboard stolen from my back yard

Where are the victims rights here. I am not supposed to protect my property because hurting a human is worse than stealing my hard earned stuff. It is getting ridiculous. I can say that I lived in a bad apartment once. To intimidate the real nice neighbors a little, I sat on my porch in plain sight sharpening my corn knife to a razors edge. For those of you that don't know what a corn knife is, it is a machette. I have put a double bevel on it. Currently, I lock my motor onto my boat with an oversized cable. If someone is determined to get the motor, it will still leave, but is 45 years old, has serial number is two places and a SSN cut into the motor.
