Looks like you know what you're doing! I just looked at my records from 2013, and poly resin is 30-40% more expensive today than what it was 10 years ago. I suspect other materials will also be more expensive, so you might want to adjust your budget.

One more thing to consider about materials and such is location.
10 years ago I lived near a larger city, complete with discount auto parts
and bulk resin.
now I live just south of 25 miles from nowhere. Even the things available
in "nowhere" need to be trucked in.
So it's either pay the "paridise" tax, or drive 150 miles back to Brooks auto.

There is shipping for some things, and that is often high these days.

That's OK. So far the "Tri-tip" project has cost only some time, and i can
afford to spend that while I consider the cost of continuing.

Just an FYI, price of resin has more than tripled over the past 5-6 years. what used to be a $16 gallon of boat yard resin is now $54 and that is picking it up and not paying the EPA fee to ship.

Are you sure, Scott? My spreadsheet showed I paid $125 for a 5 gallon pail of 435 laminating poly resin from US Composites in 2013. Their price now for the same is $178.

I don't know what the special shipping fee is these days, compared to before, though.

FGCI wants $109 for GP resin, per gal.
That won't include shipping.
I live one mile from the Pacific,
From Fla to OR ?
i might as well pay the local NAPA price of $100.per gal.

or, I might need to change any plans to 'rescue" an old boat.

NAPA is now a high priced price gouger. I checked their price for a 12" length of 2" Radiator Hose. $ 40 Pass

One thing is becomming clear, the world has changed a lot in the last 4 years, and not always for the better.
Not just NAPA, as more and more join the "price gouging" .
No need to start a list of who, most of us on the buying end see it.

Thank you Scott for your quick answer as to possible cost of rebuilding a tossed out wreck. I was thinking of things as they were 10 years ago.

So even if i split the difference between lets say $5,000 high and $1,500 low,
That's still up around $ 2,500 or more, and that's not with a 4-stroke outboard. And my wife plain out said she hates two strokes.

Bottom line my is idea of rebuilding the old tri hull I started on
is not any good.
I won't give up on the general idea yet, but might need to find
another "broken" boat instead of a 'dead" one to start with.
Something with a sound floor but broken or missing motor/outdrive.

I have built swim/motor mount platforms before, and might again.
There seem to be enough old broken boats in the $1,000 to $2,ooo
range . There might be one that has a usable hull to start with.

Anything in that price range should be considered a complete rehab. I know, I've been looking for a 2nd boat for my kids to use when they get a few years older.

16'-18' Aluminum boat would be a good starting point if you're on a tight budget. A couple sheets of ACX/BCX plywood, sealed with old timer's formula would be sufficient for both the floor and the transom. No glassing supplies required....which is a bonus for me as I have a healthy respect for grinders.

Then the cost of the 4 stroke and it ain't gonna be cheap. I know what mine cost back in 2000 and prices have only gone up from there.

OR....warm up to the pontoon. Gobs of floor space to do whatever you want. As Scott mentioned, they make privacy curtains for a porta-potti if that's a must have.

Bottom line....finding a 4 stroke non-wreck of a boat for $1-2k isn't realistic. Bump that budget...a lot. My neck of the woods...that's easily a $6k and up boat.
