Before I start my rebuild/resto project I have been reading the OMC service manual for the motor and they reference a bunch of sealants, lubercants, and adhesives. Seeing that I know OMC does not make these themselves, I am wondering if they are known by other trade names like "loctite 242" and so forth. Here is the list.

OMC Premium Blend gearcase lube
OMC Triple-Guard Grease
Evinrude Outboard Lubricant
Evinrude XP Outboard Lubricant
General Electric Versilube
OMC Power Trim/Tilt and Power Steering Fuild
OMC Cleaning Solvent
OMC Pipe Sealant with Teflon
OMC Locquic Primer
OMC Gel Seal II
OMC Adhesive M
OMC Screw Lock
OMC Nut Lock
OMC Moly Lube
OMC Black Neoprene Dip
OMC Gel Seal and Gasket Remover
OMC Ultra Lock
OMC Needle Bearing Assembly Grease
OMC HT 400
OMC Gasket Sealing COmpound

Now I have a bunch of Merc Greases and Loctie products. Just hoping to not have to buy every one of these at $10 each. Any help would be appreciated.

OMC Premium Blend gearcase lube---only if your specific motor needs it
OMC Triple-Guard Grease---this stuff is great, use it
Evinrude Outboard Lubricant ---??
Evinrude XP Outboard Lubricant---??
General Electric Versilube---??
OMC Power Trim/Tilt and Power Steering Fuild
OMC Cleaning Solvent---Trichlor will do.
OMC Pipe Sealant with Teflon---any good pipe joint sealant
OMC Locquic Primer---I never bother with Loctite primers
OMC Gel Seal II---Loctite anerobic sealer will do
OMC Adhesive M---3M makes a weatherstrip adhesive that will do here
OMC Screw Lock---??
OMC Nut Lock--- Loctite blue?
OMC Moly Lube--- a good non copper bearing moly lube will do
OMC Black Neoprene Dip---any liquid electrical tape product will do
OMC Gel Seal and Gasket Remover---auto parts store gasket remover
OMC Ultra Lock---???
OMC Needle Bearing Assembly Grease---any thick grease or even Vaseline
OMC HT 400---???
OMC Gasket Sealing COmpound---auto parts store gasket sealer (comes in a small can with a brush

Now I have a bunch of Merc Greases and Loctie products. Just hoping to not have to buy every one of these at $10 each. Any help would be appreciated.

As you can see I have a ton of this stuff already. I would really rather not have to buy any more. But if I do need it I will. I do not need my motor to go south! Please let me know if any of these with match up with the OMC list.

For example OMC Gel Seal is actually Loctite 515/518. I have Loctite 5900, will this work? I'm not fimilar with the chemical aspec of these products.

I would say no on the Loc 5900 ... it's an RTV and I don't think it's the right stuff.

Jeff,

Been following your Bayliner rebuild and will be following your motor work here. This is a good post since I have often wondered the same thing.

Wild - thanks for the answers. I would think that this should be a sticky somehow.

Re: OMC Sealants, Lubricants, and Adhesives

Ok this is what I have found out from doig research from other sources.

OMC Premium Blend gearcase lube = 75W-90W
OMC Triple-Guard Grease
Evinrude Outboard Lubricant = 2 cycle motor oil
Evinrude XP Outboard Lubricant = 2 cycle motor oil
General Electric Versilube
OMC Power Trim/Tilt and Power Steering Fuild = ATF Fuild (what type? Dex 3,4, or 5)
OMC Cleaning Solvent
OMC Pipe Sealant with Teflon = Loctite PTS
OMC Locquic Primer = Loctite 7649
OMC Gel Seal II = Loctite 515/518
OMC Adhesive M = 3M 847
OMC Screw Lock
OMC Nut Lock = Loctite 242 (Blue)
OMC Moly Lube
OMC Black Neoprene Dip = Liquid Electrical tape
OMC Gel Seal and Gasket Remover = Loctite Chisel Gasket remover
OMC Ultra Lock = Loctite 262 (Red)
OMC Needle Bearing Assembly Grease
OMC HT 400
OMC Gasket Sealing COmpound = Loctite Aviation Gkt Sealant #30517

I know that OMC is not in the chemical buisness. All tey do is use some other companies product in different packaging. So this does make sense. If anyone has any info it would be appreciated.

permatex makes alot of these products the main ones you will need to start with is the gel seal for crankcase cover its part number dont know off hand but if you get a anobolic gel at parts store for putting crankcases togather they will know what your talking about thats first on the list for rebuild so i have to go to work now ill check on this later

Re: OMC Sealants, Lubricants, and Adhesives

Ok question now

ATF fuild. Is it Dextron 3 or the new ford stuff?
OMC Moly Lube is it moly lith (white) or Moly Graph (black)?
Genral Electric Versilube is this Dielectric grease?
OMC Needle bearing assembly lube I have Red Lie assembly lube will this work?

I have found that the OMC screw lock is Loctite 222

Ok question now

ATF fuild. Is it Dextron 3 or the new ford stuff? Dex 3 should be OK
OMC Moly Lube is it moly lith (white) or Moly Graph (black)? Black, this is the stuff that goes on the driveshaft splines. I've used Triple Guard in a pinch, but never assemble dry, unless you don't care if it will ever come apart again
Genral Electric Versilube is this Dielectric grease? Not sure, if it is there's certainly a Dow Corning equal.
OMC Needle bearing assembly lube I have Red Lie assembly lube will this work? Nothing special here. It's only to hold the needles in place during assembly. It's totally gone in a second or two of running.

I have found that the OMC screw lock is Loctite 222
see above

BTW, don't get creative with the Gel Seal anaerobic sealant. Screw this up and you'll have to pull the powerhead apart again to correct.

Any thick grease will do for needle bearings. This is used with loose needle deals and is solely to hold the bearings during assembly. I've used wheel bearing grease and a variety ofr other greases. Never owned "Needle Bearing Grease" and no reason to buy it.

OMC moly lube is white, but the tube offers no hints as to composition, or performance specs.

By color basis alone, I would say that OMC moly lube "that is white" is moly-lithium based grease. This statement should get a response or two......

Good Info!

So 3M 847 is good for the spaghetti seal on crankcase halves on vintage outboards?
