First of all, thanks to all the fellas that are so willing to answer questions on this forum, and the forum itself, for offering so much past information.
I have a 91 four winns 4.3 OMC Cobra. First of all the problem is, when I put it in gear, it performs flawlessly, until I get the slack out of the rope of whatever I'm pulling, then I get a sound like I just put it in gear again, after that point, it operates normally. The history: I put in a re-manufactured engine, and had the out-drive rebuilt. "Rebuilt" as in they provided a used upper unit, with new bearings seals etc. I checked the gimbal bearing and it felt great, and had no play, so I didn't replace it. The coupler looked ok (I was nervous about it, being that the out-drive seized on me first time out, I thought it was the engine. When I started tearing into the engine, I found out it was trashed too, another story, so I just fixed both it, and the out-drive.) The joints on the drive shaft felt like new, and the splines on the coupler as well as the shaft looked excellent. I also checked the shift cable adjustment (it has the red cable) and it was perfect, and didn't need adjusting. I turned the engine 360 and checked the alignment several times as I turned it. If the coupler was bad, wouldn't it slip when I try to get on plane, not when I apply a "slight" load? Oh, and when I pulled it out of the water (yesterday) , the fluid level on the drive was fine, however it was frothy, not milky like it had water in it though.
This was my third attempt at a maiden voyage, but we did get in a good 3hrs of fun before I noticed an audible change in the boat. Couldn't be happier with the engine I got from Rapido though.
