omc 800 outdrive still won't tilt

I wrote to the forum about a problem with my 1978 omc 800 outdrive not working last week, and received some sound advice, but unfortunately, the problem remains.

The outdrive was working last week, until it suddenly stopped working. The seal had failed and there was water in the oil, which I initallt thought was the problem. The tilt motor, hammer connection, shaft, worm gear and everything else was checked and all work fine. When I hit the switch everything turns, including the clutch pack, but it does not cause the tilt shaft to turn. Clearly the clutch pack is slipping. I disassembled it. cleaned all the surfaces, let the clutch plates soak in oil, everything that was recommended, I reassembled it, and the problem remains. Am I doing something wrong? I believe I have all the pieces back in place in the correct order: 3 shims, the backing plate, a clutch plate, then a metal plate and so on, ending in the three cupped spring washers, then the retaining clip, spacer then cover. Am I missing anything? I also noticed that with everything reassembled and the cover not quite tightened down I could manually lift the entire outdrive , but when I torqued the bolts to the cover I could no longer lift the outdrive. Regardless, with the cover loose or tight, every thing still spins, but does not raise. Any additional advice? Does anyone have a better assemble diagram than the one in my SELOC guide? It is practically useless.

Sounds like the clutch pack. e-bay always have them. Don't over tighten the screws will bind the clutch.

I heard you could put 2 gaskets and tighten the screws.

I never took mine apart. Just soaked it in gas. Than blew it dry. Than soaked it in oil for a hour or 2.

I don't have a good pic of the clutch pack in my book either. When I first got my boat I dissasembled, cleaned & reassembled the clutch pack, but still had problems so I just ordered a new set of disks/shims and rebuilt it. Haven't had any problems since. IIRC the set cost about $150-175 about 4-5yrs ago.

Couple of things to try first. Remove the 3 bolts and take the tilt quadrant off of the outdrive and see if the tilt drive gear turns. Also have you greased the pivot caps? You need to pry off the rubber bumpers and there are grease fittings under them. If they haven't been done in a long time, the grease in there may be dried out and sticky. Might be a good idea to pull off the pivot caps and end plates, clean all the surfaces and re-install them with new o-ring seals & gaskets under the cover plates.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Let us know how it goes. Good luck!
