Omc 800 grinds and won't go into reverse

I have an omc 800 leg and it won't go into reverse, just grinds when I try to put it in reverse. Is this a mayor problem or a simple adjustment

It'll go in to reverse on the muffs in the yard but not when I put it in the water and try and reverse. It just grinds. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated

welcome aboard.

it would help folks if you indicated which 800 stringer you have. electric shift, hydro mechanical or pure mechanical.

as I replied to your PM, guessing you have a pure mechanical. may be able to get a bit of adjustment, however most likely the lower shift cable is stretched.

that is a really pricey part.

could also be your shift interupt is out of adjustment.

Yes it's mechanical. Sorry. I just replaced the shift cable
