Just picked up a 1962 and a 1964 model 5.5 HP Johnson.------Both are very low hour motors.----Will run like new again with a bit of work.-----These are just wonderful motors with little or no plastic on them.-----But if you have to run to a shop for repairs you will be shocked with their attitude and invoices.

I have a couple of those 1954 / 55 green CD models,-----No needle bearings on the rod journals like the 61 and newer ones.----Installed a new crankshaft in one of them in 1984 and is in storage since then.----Too many projects on the go.----Just great motors for fishing / trolling.------Picked up a 71 model 9.5 HP a while ago.-----Looked rough but still had factory machine marks on the piston rings.----Will run like new again.-----Even bought the paint to pretty it up

I have three 1957 35horse Seahorses and the engine blocks are the sturdiest ever. I run them for fun and they are in tiptop shape. Of course if you use them in salt water and do not clean them up. it becomes a different story.

Actually, OMC recommended that you not flush the old Johnnyrudes after saltwater use. Not sure why.....

Actually,that is not a joke at all.
The problem for all the outboard manufacturers was that once a customer bought an outboard he usually was set for life. Specially when the outboard was used only during a few months in summer. High quality, mass production and light use caused the market saturation which in turn caused manufacturers to go bankrupt.
The climate awareness and the switch to 4stroke and probably the switch to electric (once they get the bugs out) will give the manufacturers a new lease on life.
I do not expect my $3000 dollar 9.9 Suzuki to last 10 years, exactly because of the above mentioned argument.
