old 6hp only runs with choke

i was recently given an old 6 horse evinrude that starts fine, but needs the choke pulled half way out to run. it stalls with the choke in. where do i start? it worked normal for about 200 yrds before this started.

Clogged carb, bad fuel pump, other restriction in fuel system. All are pretty easy to fix.

Welcome to iboats.

When was the carb last rebuilt? May be time for a bath and overhaul as stated. Be sure to get all orifices/jets thoroughally clean. Check the sticky at the top of the page by Tashasdaddy.

Will pumping the primer bulb pick it up? Spraying pre mix into the carb?
