I see that impeller getting you towed in after setting all day in the hot sun because your impeller came apart and ran your motor hot due to lack of water flow thru the engine.
Not familiar with the thurst bearing style propeller mine uses splines in the propeller hub and a splined thrust washer as a spacer between the gear case and propeller, sorry can't be of much help there.

OK this is a long shot seeing I don't know a lot about water except that I use a lot of it.
Here goes, conensation, when temps stay hot and cold on a regular basis condensation can form such as the moisture on the inside of your house windows with the heat on and warm inside and the air outside cold forms water droplets on the warmer surface, another words the surface can sweat.
This may be how your water got in your lower unit but not sure.

I'd almost bet money the water leaked in.(I'm not a betting guy)
You could give it a pressure test. But its probably best to just go ahead and do all the seals.I wouldn't mess with the gear case until you have the manual.
You'll probably have to buy or fabricate some tools to properly service it.

Pressure test thru the Vent plug using adapter part No. FT-8950, pressurize to 10psi. Push, pull and rotate the driveshaft, propeller shaft and actuate the shift rod while observing the pressure guage for 5 minutes. If the pressure does not remain steady, submerge the gearcase in water and pressurize to 10psi. Check for air bubbles to locate the source of the leak.
