Re: Ok Getting ready to rehab my Spectrum Some ????s

Okay making parts list. I do want Marine grade plywood for floor and transom? And is it acceptable to use spar finish on all the wood?

Call Lowe's or Home Depot and get some "Aruco" brand plywood in the thickness you want. It's way less than marine and is water proof glued with no voids. Just as good as Marine but 1/2 the cost. I found it at a local lumber yard here in metro Detroit. But you don't need marine, and don't use any pressure treated plywood, it will react to the aluminum and ruin the hull. As for the finish, others should pipe in, but I would use resin and completely encase the pieces, including any screw holes you create to fasten it down. Some guys over size pre-drilled holes, for fastening her down. then coat it all with peanut butter, then drill into that for complete water proof flooring. Do a search on Peanut butter here, to understand what I'm talking about. it will be the last floor you ever install in this boat, and it's very easy to do.

Thanks, I think I will try to find that plywood tomorrow. Some great advise thanks!! As far as your boat goes I would check the foam and where the foam meets the transom. Mine was like small little swimming pools, when they sprayed the foam it went into all the cracks and gave the water nowhere to run.

Not all lumber yards will carry this wood, you may need to order it or shop around to find a place that can get it. But calculate how much and make one trip. Usually makes sense to put in, exactly what was original to keep everything lined up. Side panels and consoles, all that stuff. I think I'm gonna stay away from floor carpet, just do the vertical stuff with carpet, I'll wrap vinyl around the new floor. That and a pedestal captains seat. Not fond of the box under the drivers seat. Keep the pictures coming, it will help me when I do mine later this month.

I got my resin from here: Clark Craft Boat Plans and Kits cuz I liked the dummy-proof 1:1 ratio. The amount needed varies widely depending on how thirsty your wood is. My deck sucked up 3 gallons by itself. That was two coats each side hitting the edges every time.

Update: Denial...
I figured the foam was good, I thought I would work from the back until I found dry foam and replace as needed. Long story short all the foam is now out of the boat.

I have to tell you that foam is HEAVY I was plugging away filling a contractor bag as I went. Went to lift it out of the boat and the bottom ripped out!!! I found that I could only fill them 1/4 way and they were 100-150 lbs.

Pics to follow.

Plywood here, foam on order, gluvit also ordered as well as the Nautolex.

Tomorrow to clean and Vacuum all residual foam, fill a couple of transducer holes, hope to add some water and check for leaks.

Re: Ok Getting ready to rehab my Spectrum Some ????s

Finally a free afternoon, Got the inside power washed and checked for leaks. None WHOO HOO. Cut transom and floor and first coat of epoxy on bottom of floor and transom. Spent some time trying to lay out new casting deck, was coming up with some crazy ideas, must be the epoxy. LOL

Does anyone happen to know where to get 1" rivets? decided to re-rivet the floor, glass the seams(2) and then Nautolex on the floor, up the gunwales and on the casting decks.
Going to use pour in floatation foam in the floor cavities, well maybe a hybrid foam. Grabbed a sheet of the pink sheet foam, going to cut in 2 inch strips by 8'. Going to bevel the edges and attach to stringers. Hoping to give the water, if any, a channel to exit to bilge. Don't know if it will work but worth a shot.

Will post pics of progress in a bit.

Foam is a pain. I'm a fan of the hybrid foam board/pourable solution you've proposed.

Re: Ok Getting ready to rehab my Spectrum Some ????s

Okay little update, if anyone cares lol.

bottom of the Floor is sealed with epoxy, added 4 braces to stringers (2x2 alum.) Floor is riveted in. Transom is installed, making new cap this weekend. Bought 2 sheets of 2" pink foam, used one. Poured in 2 gallons of 3lb foam. Deck is now in and 1 coat of resin on topside. Front casting deck is cut and sealed, ran 1/2" plastic conduit for electric to the front and from transom to the helm to make pulling wires easier.
Decided not to get Nautolex and I am going with carpet. Nautolex was back ordered, so easy choice.
Will post a couple of pics

Looking really good, on the floors, did you seal the edges up really good? that's were the rot will start if it gets wet, and they all get wet a little. You're inspiring me to start mine, but I will hold off for warmer weather, Michigan ya know. And we care too, any boat project gets attention of most here. Keep going!!!

Thanks greenbush, hope spring comes soon. I will be more than happy to help in anyway I can.
Going to get seats stretched and stapled on Tuesday if work allows. My plans changed a little with the seats so I may have an extra one.
Anyone know where I can pick up lund style seat posts, I know they have a type of cushion system that I would love to have.

Green I cannot wait to see that twin outboard set-up looks SWEET!!!

The air shock seat post's you speak of are worth the extra cost, and you will prolly freak out at the cost. I cant offer where to get em, Bass Pro sells em, but they are retail, and most of us hate to pay retail for this stuff. The Lone Star project will be re-opened soon, life got in the way, bride to be, moved in, my life and priorities seemed to have changed, WTH, I'm about to refocus and bring her out of the barn to finish. I have everything I need, just need time!!! and some 70 degree weather for once, todays high will be 52, ughhh, maybe I 'll finish the twin 35's tune up and new lower seals.

What do you plan to do with your transom cap when reinstalling? Weld it back on? I have a Spectrum 1606 that is going through the same process as yours. I started pulling just enough stuff to get the transom out. Once it was out I found wet foam. Now the boat is down to the hull. I had to cut the welds and to remove the transom cap. I also cut the cap\engine well into three pieces...engine well, left cap, and right cap. I planned on reinstalling the three pieces and then having it welded. Now that everything is out of the boat I think I might be able to have it welded first and then fit it in place. The only thing I'm worried about with welding is the head messing up the sealant for the cap.

I know well about life getting in the way! The wife decided that the Chaparral needed new seats too. I will post some before and afters for you. Good luck with the wife to be, as long as she understands you have a couple "mistresses" all should go well.
