Hi All,

This may be a dumb question, but it has been bothering me. I recently rebuilt the carb, did a full tune up and changed out the Impeller on my 1965 evinrude 9.5hp out board. I ran it in a 30 gallon container the other day. It was running for about 3-5 minutes. The question is, when I was done running it, the water in the container was slimey and smelled of oil. when I drained the container there was actually a ring of oil around the inside rim. The only leak I found was very small and where the fuel line from the gas tank connects to the port in the motor. That doesnt seem like it would be enough to cause that much oil in the water. Is it normal to have that kind of oil in the container after running for just a few minutes?

Thanks,

joel

Unburnt fuel, carbon, etc from exhaust. When you're idling on the lake, you probably notice a slight oil sheen and a bit of smoke around the motor. The barrel concentrates all that stuff in one small place, especially since it's idling.

Not pretty, but I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Normal. Unburnt 2-cycle oil which you mixed with the gas. Once it's done it's job of lubricating the cylinders, much of it is expelled with the exhaust.

Re: Oil in Barrel

Agree with above but would add the 9.5 puts way more oil in the water per minute of run time than my 9.9 or 15. At first this made no sense but after using it for a while I realized it uses quite a lot more gas than the 9.9 and 15 so more oil suddenly made sense. Best of luck. Rick.
