Re: Ohio to vote on being Smoker Free

My .02..."I OWN" a public place of business and I feel I should have the right to decide if it will be smoke free or not. If I decide to have a Smoking Section or not, that too should be my choice. Businesses with a smoking section are just trying to cater to individual likes and dislikes. If I do offer a nonsmoking section it should be totally isolated, HVAC included. If I allow smoking, isolated or not, maybe I should (by law) have to afix a hazard to health warning sign on the entrance. Probably have to be in 20 different languages, verbal audio, and brail, but, it is "MY" business I should be allowed to cater to any group or groups of people "I CHOOSE". If YOU CHOOSE to do business with me great, if not thats YOUR CHOICE, and freedom of choice is great too.

This sounds like the seat belt arguement sort of.....Forcing an individual to do or not to do something, will save lives & lower health care costs.....Wait till the tax revenues drop, the money will have to come from somewhere, them sin taxes are just too easy.....As an ex-smoker, I feel for those still addicted, but I really like the idea that smoking is banned from public places, whether they are privately owned or publicly owned....You will never be able to convince me that cigarette smoke is not detrimental to your (or my)health "QC", what is the "lie" here?.....JK

I'm sorry, but the last time I drove through Ohio, Cleveland to be exact, the smoke in the air was not from smokers. I noticed from miles away that there seem to be polution from factories in the air, and it was covering a whole lot of public space. :(

You have the Republicans to blame for that LF....They have no problem with relaxing environmental policy, in the name of big business, & corporate profit....Been to L.A. lately? .....JK

Here is a tid bit of info I found on the WHO website. That a increase in tobacco tax goes hand in hand with the acceleration of poverty. Imagine that? So for each time the tax is raised to get people to quit smoking, its making its poor people poorer.

BTW, on average, 800 families a month leave this state. Who is going to make up those lost taxes? Yep, the cigarette smoker. But how come the booze that kills innocent people never gets the big jump in tax?

SS, i'd be willing to say that it probably creeps up a little at a time, too....Just not enough at a time to get everyone worked up! BTW, Washington added a 50 cent tax on top of the existing tax in July (I think).....I am more than happy for smokers to bear the tax burden for me.....I do wish that I had all of the money that I pi$$ed away back though :( ....JK

booze vs cigarette are apples to oranges.....

Why the correlation between cigarette tax and poverty? If it beause the poor have to pay more to smoke, then I question their own money management not the tax itself.

As a matter of fact I have. There isn't any industry left in California. Californians, IMHO spend way too much time in their cars. Many of them old ones to boot.

Why is it the biggest brown clouds are around airports??? Nobody wants to skewer that sacred cow though.

THOSE ARE NOT PUBLIC PLACES as long as they are privately owned.

I like to walk through the smoking section and fart. After all, it is MY colon and I can decide when and when not to allow noxious fumes to escape.

Hmmm....I think that any establishment is a public place if the public is to do business there....Would you smoke while shopping for guns at Wallyworld or shopping for tires at Les Schwab? I think not! The times are changing, like it or not!....JK

I'm sure Billy the Kid and his gang were upset when Big Nosed Kate said they can't spit their chew on the floors no more cuz it's not good for business and it's a nasty habit.

There were probably many that thought there rights were eroding... but I gotta say, it's nice not to walk into a restaurant and step in a soggy pile of chew!

Someday it'll be nice to be sitting in a restaurant and not get choked with smoke each time someone opens the door and let's in a cloud from the closely huddled group standing outside less than 8' from the doors.

I have this vision of Billy and his gang huddled about eight feet from the swinging doors of a old west bar ……………….chewing and spitting on each others boots. :D

Mr. Kopec,

The lie is about second hand smoke. The risk has been greatly exaggerated despite some of the contrary posts. BTW, I am a non-smoker and I love that restaurants are smoke free, but I love freedom more ;)

My kids talk more about tobacco than anything else that they learn in school. What a waste of my kid's education. I occasionally enjoy a cigar. They think I am committing suicide

Also, I am gonna take you to task on something . . . I was born in Downtown LA. I have lived within 35 miles my whole life with the exception of about 18 months. I am 46. There have been 26 years with a Republican Governor and 20 with a Democrat. The air is the cleanest in LA that it has ever been, probably 1/5 of the problem it was. It definitely has improved over the years. This is why I am NOT a libertarian; economics would not have straightened that one out. No question in my mind. With that said, you cannot blame something on Republicans that did not happen, but they should get credit for something that did . . .
