I guess they have finally pushed a petition through to get it on the ballot. The whole state would be smoke free in all public places. (if it gets voted in)

I'm somewhat for and againt this idea. In all public buildings is pretty much smoke free. They want anything that deals with the public to be smoke free.

Now how does this work in a park or lake where the public uses outside? I just feel this is going a bit too far.

Holy cow!

Can of worms to specify what is or is not a "public place".

Does Carrie Nation come to mind?

Just big bro chipping away at your rights. I am not a smoker but Whats wrong with having designated areas within restaurants, stores, the workplace and such for smokers? It seems to work here in Pa. If someone wants to run a smoke free establishment thats fine, but forcing business owners to go smoke free is wrong IMHO. Essentially all public places means everywhere but your own home.

I know,, Maybe the Governor can take a bunch of property under eminent domain and create a whole smoke free village all their own. Maybe a whole county, why not. Yeah thats the ticket.

SS,

Being from Ohio also, I knew this was coming. "public Place," is a good question when it comes to outdoors. I am a bit confused though. Is this for public buildings/facilities only, or any building or structure the public has access to?

Some places here are smoke free, but the most have a smoking area.
They have a place here called Central Park that is an outdoor park that they are trying to make smoke free.

Why do we need smoking areas in restaurants????? I'm sorry but for the good of everyone there that is eating, I think the smokers can go without lighting up for the small amount of time there. To me smoking in a place where people are eating is one of the most rude, vile, and disgusting habits.......especially when the designation between smoking and non smoking is a 4ft partition wall if anything. Its like tring to keep salf water and fresh water seperated by a mesh screen.

If by stores you mean places like Wal-mart or Target and any of those types of stores...........then it is about the dumbest idea I have ever heard.

Smoking, unlike other personal freedoms, greatly affects those who choose not to smoke. Thats where it is an issue with me. At work if people want to go outside in a designated area or smoke in their own home, then so be it.........But if people want to smoke in a place like a restaurant then I have an issue. I don't mind smoke in bowling allies and places like that..............but if you cant control the urge for the hour or two that you are in a restaurant, then IMHO you have a bigger problem.

Washington implemented a smoking ban in all indoor places & 25 feet from any door, window or vent of such places.....This went into effect on December 8th of this year.......It was implemented by voter initiative, so we can't blame 'Big Brother'.....The only bad thing that Came from this is:
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
'
I quit smoking! ;) I wonder what Washington will do to make up for the lost reveue from taxes?

 :) ....JK

:p

I used to smoke, and after I quit, it never really bothered me all that much untill as of late, when I dont really care for it. As for smoking in restaurants, do I like it when other people are smoking? No. BUT, IMHO it is up to the restaurant owner to make that decision whether or not to allow smoking. If they feel that they will have more customers if they allow smoking, then so be it. I would agree that it should be banned in public places, for you have no choice in the matter if you need to go to the courthouse for instance. But you do have a choice in where you eat dinnner. If you dont like the smoking at JB's burger stand, go to Ponys hot dog joint. Plain and simple, if you dont like the smoking policy (whatever it may be) tell the owner of the restaurant your feelings. The market will decide the outcome.

I used to think that way cpj (that its up to the restaurant)......then I saw something that really got my goat........

The only place left for us to sit was at a table that ajoined the smoking section. The lady sitting at the table next to us was blowing her smoke directly at our table.......why? She didnt want to get smoke near HER food or those at her table. So all this smoke keeps blowing at my dads food. The issue with that is he had just been diagnosed with a cancer that is caused from smoking (he has never touched a cig in his life)

Yeah you can choose to go somewhere that prohibits smoking..........but why should my options be severly limited just because someone cant go an hour without smoking.

Look at what you just wrote Pony. Many smokers may feel the same way. Why should their options of restaurant's be limited. I believe that the owner of any establishment should have the right to choose if it wants smokers or not. So far you have the right to avoid these establishments if you want. But watch out soon they may regulate that too.

By the way I abhor smokers in restaurants. It is the idea that more and more simple every day things seem to be regulated and laid out for us these days that gets my goat.

I am sure that many smokers feel that way Flathead......and they have the right to. The difference that I see is that smoking risks the health of all, not just those who choose to do it. My not smoking doesnt negatively affect anyone except the tobacco companies.

Obviously my view is skewed because of my dads cancer, and it is a tricky subject.....legislation either way effects someone's rights.

I think CPJ and Flathead hit it on the head.

I'm offended by Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers still on cars. Let's infringe on the freedom of speech and outlaw this travesty once and for all. Let's tell a private business owner what he can and can't do. When this happens we'll know we've finally embraced the Socialist ideals.

HM, must be voter inititive since petitions were signed to get on the ballot. From what I observe out in town, there are a lot of people that smoke in this area.

What I find somewhat amusing is that the World Health Organization has recently declared that second had smoke is not dangerous as previously proclaimed. I heard that on AM radio last week, but I doubt if you will hear that on any national network since they are anti-tabacco.

I still feel like the public has been mislead on its dangers. Sorta like Bush being mislead on its intelligence of Iraq. America, always putting the horse before the cart. At least it seems that way.

BTW, our govenor is now last on the list of bad govenors. Last year he was the 48th. Thank god for term limits is all I can say.

I used to smoke haven’t smoked for fifteen years. when I was smoking had a two pack a day habit.

The wife and me go out and eat about twice a week and when we go to some place that has smoking with a divider that smoke can come over around or thru we turn around and go out. There are plenty of good eating establishments around that have no smoking or isolated smoking.

One of our favorites is Ryan’s steakhouse they have the smokers isolated in a room all by themselves. That surely could not be healthy for the smokers but probably saves them some dough on smokes having too breathe all that second hand smoke. ;)

Hey .Pony. got a light? The non smoking policy in Ca works very well. There are indian casinos for those that like all that smoke with their drinks and dinner :D I enjoyed smoking for 25 years and I've enjoyed not smoking for 15 thank-you. I wonder how the beggers I see can afford to smoke when a carton is "on sale" for $35.00.

What he said is true folks
What he didn't tell you is this.
We were almost smoke free as it was before the ban put forth by the dept of Heath. A feel good measure at best. Last year a ban.. now voted on.

There was only one cafe in the south sound were I could go to have a cup of coffee and a smoke.
Unless I wanted to go to a bar at 6am or wanted to drive 20 minutes away. Then there were three.
Now there is no-where

BTW the cafe owned by a friend of mine that I have been going to for 15 years is now down over $3000.00 a day.
Has always been open 24/7 365 days a year. With 16 empoyees.
As of 2 Jan 06 he is down to 4 employees and open from 6am to 3 pm (one shift)

Dept of Health is now running daily radio adds at our expence on how everyone has the right now to breath clean air.

They (dept of health) are now having their slimmys (lawyers) looking into the law to see if it can expanded to cover

A: Bus Stops
B: Condo's (yea where people live)
C: Apartments (same as above)
D: Cars waiting in line for Ferrys (cars on streets will be next)
E: Lets not forget the little GD kids. Mrs.Link just told me about that. Anywhere kids are at risk. That should cover private? homes!

This is another little known fact:2004 Last Nov/Dec when the Dept of health did the test Ban (and that was what is was)

Remember my friend mentioned above whose buisness is being ruined! His brother owns a small Motel and the dept of health sent letters (not advertised or reported by the media) to all motels that they could no longer have "smokeing rooms"
They didnt try to enforce it last year but that would have emptied 80% of his rooms.

The place where we have been going for 20 years on new years eve.. they will be closing tonight at 10 pm.

Oh yes it did get voted on. But it was pushed by a very few with money to back them and a agenda that isn't over yet.

Have a Happy and safe New Years Eve

Re: Ohio to vote on being Smoker Free

I'm a smoker...thought I would post that first. In my opinion smoking is bad for the smokers health. I do not believe there has been any credible science that occasional exposure to second hand smoke is bad for non-smokers. If such real proof was available, what is the exposure level ? How many PPM in the air is considered "dangerous". With today's modern technology, why can't they (the government) dictate what level is permissible in a non-smoking section and leave it up to the business owner to install the needed smoke-eaters and air handling equipment to maintain that, IF he wants to have a smoking section ?
I'm all for non smokers having clean air, so why can't the issue be addressed as keeping their air clean, not simply following the hysteria that if someone smokes in a building it is endangering everyone else ?
