Ya know, I work in an office, but I do a lot of physical work at home. I have a really big yard, and an average to small size house. Outside I shovel snow, dig holes for trees, install permanent outdoor lighting, build rock walls, cut the 2+ acres of lawn, trim trees shrubs and garden edges. On the cars I try to do as much as my abilities allow or what I am willing to do (most simple mechanical repairs, replace generators, water pumps, brake jobs, flush radiators, all electrical, etc), and some really big projects like finish off my basement, and finish off expansion rooms in the house.

And don't forget the boat make over project!!!!

Now the only reason I list all that stuff is so you have a reference to what I am willing to take on......

For the last few days I have been nailing down pre-finished hardwood flooring. 3/4" x 2.25" Ash strip from Armstrong/Bruce. It has taken me 12 hours to complete half of a 14x14 foot dining room (over two days) and then another 6 hours to do the second half (well, about 18" from done).

The problem is ACHING MUSCLES!!!! GOSH!!!! Every muscle in my body aches. From toes to finger tips. And I'm using a Pneumatic flooring nailer!!!! I cannot imagine not using a pneumatic nailer at this point.

I told my wife that after I finish the dining room and living room, and upstairs hallway (I bought enough flooring for all that), if any other rooms are to be done, we will pay an installer.

I am tired and sore. Did I mention that I am tired and sore? Every fiber? It hurts to walk, breath, grab stuff, and even last night...... well I'll leave that one alone...... :D

I did 1400 square feet in my house a few years ago, and I agree......it was the most physically draining job I have ever done, and that includes building a 1250 square foot cottage from clearing the lot to final linseed oil on the cedar siding.
I think it's the constant up and down motion combined with carrying the packages of wood, that weigh about 70#, if I remember right.

The good thing is that you'll enjoy the beauty of a nice shiny hardwood floor that looks miles better than any type of carpeting.
What wood did you lay?

I went with Pergo flooring NO nailing at all. :)

With Pergo?s dual-locking installation system, a do-it-yourselfer can click together a living room size floor in about a day

You're going to feel the same way after trying to clean that crap. I don't do hardwood flooring, no way. Way too hard to keep clean and way too easy to damage. It is pretty though. After hearing the horror stories from my parents cleaning theirs and me having to clean the lobby at work and it's hardwood flooring, that made me realize that I don't want it in my home, unless its already there when I buy it.

When I was growing up, my parents had hardwood installed in their living and dining room by a man with one arm. Just sayin' :p

We believe you shouldn?t have to sacrifice your home?s beauty just because you need a durable, low maintenance floor. Pergo?s premium laminate surface ensures dirt and dust will not adhere to your floor and guarantees it will not stain or fade like other flooring surfaces. With a few easy maintenance steps, you?ll find taking care of your Pergo floor is remarkably simple.
Just saying. :)

I've heard of a one armed paper hanger. ;)

Mark42 - Don't give up just yet, your just getting in shape. The rest will be real easy. :D I've done about 1200 sq/ft of 3/8 glue down. It wasn't too bad, but my knees were killing me.

Good luck :)

Its Ash, just a tad harder than oak, depending on what hardness scale is checked. Ash has a white outer growth ring, and the inner most areas have black streaks.

Yeah, you are right, but real hardwood is a totally different animal.

Send him here.

About half way through the room...

No offense, but there is a world of difference between pergo snap together flooring and real solid hardwood. I can spot it a long way off. And the sound from walking on it is totally different.

But I do have to admit, the Pergo products are good quality and last a long time.

BTW, one plus I hadn't counted on was stiffening of the floor. The house has 2x10 joists, 16" OC (no more than 13' long) with 3/4" plywood T&G subfloor. Once the hardwood was nailed down, my 160 lbs son jumped up and down in the center of the room and the floor hardly flexed at all! Holy cow!! What a difference I did not expect!!!

Anyone else experience this?

What I think you need is to put any other work on hold till after you get a good day of boating in.

I put birch in my first venture and oak in my second.....the oak is much more secure. The birch had some give, but I think that was from the staples moving, not the actual wood. The oak is as tight as a %$@#%&)unt and that's because the floor joists are only 12" and 2x12's.

Re: Oh Goodness (aka %$@#$^%) am I sore....

I've found that with jobs like this it's the repeated standing and kneeling that really gets you. I bet if you had a helper to hand you the wood it would make a world of difference.

I did period hardwoods in my 1920 built house. It was only a 12' x 3' section but it took a long time. Each row was only 1" wide!! And I did it with a hammer and nails. Took me a couple of days. After I nailed everything down I had ti go back with putty and fill all of the nail holes. I didn't even realize how many nails I used until I grabbed that putty. Holy cow!!

When I reached the end of a row I just cut that piece and the extra wood from that cut started the next row.

I have some pergo in the current house that looks like real wood. The cheap pergo looks really bad in my opinion. The stuff I used has a little chamfer at the edges which really makes it seem like real wood. you can tell it's not real wood but it looks just as good.
