I just got an old O'Day 11 sailboat that is missing it's sail and daggerboard. Has anyone had an O'Day 11 or seen one fully rigged? I plan on making the sail and daggerboard, and would love to know how the sail connects to the mast and boom. I can probably figure out the daggerboard. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Please?

No idea, and I've never heard of an 11 foot O'Day either.
Maybe you should post something on the Oday owners forum. Google it.
Good luck!

If it was built by O'Day, Your likely to find it here-

http://www.gjenvick.com/BangorPunta/ODay/index.html

No "O'Day 11" model listed, but perhaps it was called something else.

Good luck!

Thanks! After looking through this website, the closest match for a hull is the O'Day Snark Sailboat but the mast/rigging does not match the mast and boom that came with the boat. The mast and boom almost looks like they could belong to a Laser. So basically the boat I have has a hull of a Sunfish and a mast & boom of a Laser. Ugh!

Several boats from the 60s and 70s came with both a lateen rig or a high aspect ratio (Laser-like) sail option. Heaven forbid the marketing dept. should miss an opportunity.

So, you have a boat that leans toward up-wind performance, but may require a little more trim tweaking than the more simple lateen setup.

Even Sunfish had the Super Sunfish, high aspect ratio sail model available for a few years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunfish_(sailboat)#Super_Sunfish

Re: O'Day 11 sailboat

Thank you all for your input/advice. I've been searching the O'Day and now Sunfish websites and nothing seems to match. I went back out to my boat and measured it again. It is 11 feet (give or take an inch) and inscribed on the back is 'OD11'.
My question is now is 'What is the best way to attach a sail to a boom and a mast that does not have tracks/grooves?' I was thinking of making a sail with a mast sleeve similar to a Laser sail but since the mast is so long I would rather create a sail that I can hoist. Any ideas?

You might be able to pick up some old, inexpensive windsurfing sails to play with. Just a thought...

TMALUS, Can you post a pic of what you have? As well as what you do to make it usable? I can't quite picture what you're describing. I know of a sailboat junkyard, maybe he can help if I go in with a pic.

Is your boat a sloop or cat rig? There was an O'Day 12 that had just a mainsail. The Widgeon, also 12 feet, had a main and jib. Check out drmarine.com and go into their oday site. They list all the parts and have alot of stuff available.

Andl last but not least, Oday made the Sprite, looks a lot like the Widegeon, just a foot or two shorter.

At a small Marina I ran back in the 70s we had two Widgeons and two Sprites. If I remember right, both were sloop rigged. I can not remember though if the Sprite was dagger board or center board. I think centerboard.

Hope this helps,

Re: O'Day 11 sailboat

I have an OD11 just like gunpilot's but mine is yellow. This boat was designed in collaboration with George O'Day but was not built by the O'Day company. It is not an O'Day 11. Here is a link to a brochure of the OD11.

I did a lot of searching trying to find information on this boat but there's not much about it out on the web.

The Topper is an 11' boat with the identical hull but made of polypropylene and with a more advanced rig.

Re: O'Day 11 sailboat

I have owned a blue and white OD11 for almost 30 years now. I've been looking for other owners. Possibly someone who might be tired of there boat and might want to get rid of it, or just chat about the boats. I think it would be really cool to have 2 of them so when my boys go out they can be in identical boats.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: O'Day 11 sailboat

this is pretty cool.
I bought my OD 11 (it's not an O'Day) made by Snapir, about 30 years ago.
I found this thread back in June, just looking for other OD 11 owners.
Well, the red and white boat in Gunpilot's picture above looked cool so I saved it. A few months ago it turned up on Craigslist in Houston just a couple miles from my house. Now it's mine, and I finally have my pair!:)
I'm still curious how many more of them are out there.

I've been sailing my OD11 on the Puget Sound and nearby lake waters for the past 10 years. Love the boat....don't know why anyone would part with one!

Re: O'Day 11 sailboat

I also have a Force 5 and a Capri 13.
Both of these are 13 ft boats. They are designed for racing and are a lot faster. I can see why they are so popular, but I still like my OD11's.
I'm about done for the year cause hunting season is starting, but next spring I plan on up grading both of the OD's. I have a junior sized sail that came with the Force 5. If I can get another, then things will be different.
I think they will pick up a lot of speed.
One other thing I like is how light they are. getting back up after a capsize is real easy.
Anyway , it's nice to finally hear from another OD11 owner.
Post some pics!
